Bought a footfile which I found out from an email from Ebay is defective they are refusing a refund for this item as its past 30 days money back guarantee. The e mail they sent was past the 30 day guarantee so how was I ever meant to get money back ebay seem quite happy to sell defective items

This seems to be happening more and more.
Ebay are only obliged to inform you, what you choose to do about it is up to you. Ebay won't help if you are past their 30 day guarantee, but you could try speaking to Citizens Advice.

You will have to try the seller or even the manufacturer.
Ebay didn't sell you the item but they are obliged to inform you if there is a product warning or recall.
After that, it is between you and the seller and sellers are often unhelpful.

Ebay is purely a selling platform for sellers to advertise on.
You buy from individual seller.
Ebay offer 30 day MBG, this is in addition to consumer rights, but they won't get involved with those.
