Hi there, I have sold an item and upon delivery it was damaged in the post. How do I apply for a refund

If you used Simple Delivery you are protected if the item is lost/damaged from when the item is scanned into the courier's delivery network  until it's delivered.  That means ebay will pay the refund to the buyer, not you.   So ask the buyer to open a claim using the reason "arrived damaged" or similar and you should be OK.

It looks as if you have been using Simple Delivery for your items.

Your buyer needs to open a return stating that the item was damaged in transit.

Ebay will reimburse the buyer and you won't have to repay them or make a claim.
