I am new to this. My first five sales on here were all purchased by one buyer. He wants them combined on one invoice but it tells me when I try 'Invoices cannot be sent for items when e-bay manages all or part of the postage etc etc'. Can someone tell me what to do in language that can be understood by a 75 year old?

With eBay's new Simple Delivery system you can only combine if they were bought in one transaction at checkout. If not you can send them together but you will only have tracking for one of them.
To mark them as dispatched you can generate each individual label and then if you paid for them you can cancel them here:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/claims/simple-delivery/refund/seller
If the buyer paid for them they will be refunded automatically in 30 days.
The payments for the untracked items will be released in 14 days.
The alternative would be to cancel/refund the transactions with the buyer's agreement and relist with items on one listing and a single postage cost for the buyer to buy and pay again.
Sorry it's so complicated.

It's a shame. A lot of sellers feel the same. eBay implemented this before ironing out all the problems. 😞

This may help some sellers are adding this, or similar words to their listings:
..... ' If you wish to buy multiple items, please let me know before buying, I will relist them as one listing so only one postage cost is charged, combining postage is not currently possible. '
