My wife saw a trouser suit for sale, which she bought.
The following day, she saw another trouser suit for sale, which was a different colour and price, but the same maker. The listing for this suit had a different order number, but it was from the same seller. My wife bought the second suit.
She received ebay confirmation of both purchases, and both items appeared in her list of purchases.
My wife contacted the seller to check they were different colours, and received a reply to the effect that they were the same colour.
The seller stated that they were the same colour, and that there was only one suit for sale.
My wife contacted e-bay to find out if she could cancel the second purchase as it clearly did not exist.
e-bay said yes.
The seller contacted ebay, refusing to let my wife cancel this non-existent item
The seller also sent my wife a message to the effect that she , the seller, could not understand why my wife wanted to cancel something she had not seen or received.
My wife did receive the "first" suit she bought, and was extremely pleased with the purchase. She conveyed this to the seller.
In the same message, my wife said she would contact e-bay after the due date for the delivery of the second purchase had passed, and explain to ebay that there had been a duplication of the listing.
She has contacted ebay, and asked for a refund, explaining the circumstances.
e-bay replied, saying they would forward her communication to the seller, and if the problem had not been solved by 4th September, they would refund my wife under the e-bay guarantee.
The seller sent my wife a message which could only be interpreted as an indication that the seller did not understand that there had been two listings for the same item, and my wife had purchased the same suit twice under different order numbers, all of which is on record, as are the messages pertaining to this situation.

Thanks for that advice.
She has done exactly that.
ebay forwarded her message to them, regarding not received, to the seller!!!
If there is no resolution before 4th September, ebay will refund the money, they say.
Time will tell.

After the delivery date has passed, your wife should open an item not received case.
That is all that needs to be done.
Messaging the seller, getting in touch with Ebay etc. are all unnecessary.
For the second, separate purchase, your wife will be refunded because the seller will not be able to prove delivery.
Buyers only fail to get refunds they are entitled to when they don't follow the process.

Rather than the complicated way it has been done and involving ebay, when it is unsafe to rely on what they tell you, all that was necessary was to open a NOT RECEIVED CASE. The process is automatic, if seller does not refund, after 3 days buyer escalates the case and ebay refunds, at sellers expense.
