Bought a car on ebay and its been anything but usable

I bought a car from Ebay in January and it's been nothing but usable since the get go, I messaged the seller around 2 weeks after buying it incase it was a fluke but infact it wasn't and it's only got worse,  it was a 1.3 diesel and over the past 5 months of ownership my partner has spent 3 months of his days off trying to fix it by fitting a turbo, catylic converter, dpf, glow plugs, glow plug relay, new ECU  and loads of other bits and bobs.  It was running really rough and smoking really badly- there were no oil leaks etc , power steering was intermittent (electric power steering)

Seller took it back to try and fix it and said it was fixed but I asked if he could put it through an mot just so it had one when for when it came back but the mot states otherwise (failed) it didn't pass the emissions test either so it still has the initial issue.

I told the seller today (13.05.25) I basically don't want it  back as its never going to pass an mot with its issue still there and to have a refund , now he's saying he's moving back home in another country & he can refund me next month but I have a gut feeling that's not going to happen

Anyone know if I can take this further? I can't find anywhere semi helpful on ebay as he marked the car as sold weeks after it had been paid for , now I'm £1,300 out of pocket along with all the time spent on it and all the stuff i have bought  & I'm not going to be able to buy another car which i need as soon as possible as it was all chucked at this 🥴

You should be  aware that there is NO MONEY BACK guarantee with vehicles and nothing can be done through ebay.

It is up to buyers to check the condition of a vehicle, or have it checked by someone capable of proper inspection, before paying.

Was it a business seller, if so trading standards may help.

Good luck to you. I'm pleased to hear that you may have resolved the issue, but it has nothing to do with eBay - or with us. The time to read eBay's T&C is before buying a motor vehicle.

eBay makes it very clear that they do not offer any buyer protection for motor vehicles. If there are any problems with a purchase its up to the buyer to try to resolve with the seller, or through the courts. Thee is no point in posting about them here. The best thing to do is contact Citizens Advice if you need any help.
