eBay stopped sellers leaving bad feedback for buyers because sellers were abusing feedback.
The false positive you left the buyer is serious feedback abuse.
why not use the tools eBay gave you and hit them with an unpaid strike?

There is a process you have to follow.
When you sell an item, it will appear in your orders and say next to it 'Buyer has not paid. You can cancel for non-payment ...' with a date.
The buyer has 4 days to pay so you can cancel using the reason 'buyer did not pay' on day 5. The option to cancel for that reason appears in the dropdown menu on day 5.
Don't send reminder invoices as that resets the date you can cancel.
When you cancel using 'buyer did not pay', the buyer gets a non-payment strike on their account. This lasts for a year. Sellers can block bidders with 2 or more strikes so it does have an impact.
A lot of sellers complain that non-paying bidders 'get away with it'. They can only do this if sellers let them.
Do not leave feedback for people who don't pay you. As advised, it is feedback abuse, is not allowed and could damage your account.

As advised negative feedback cannot be left and all you're doing by leaving a negative comment on a positive rating is increasing the buyers feedback score and leaving yourself open to a defect mark against your account from eBay.
Did the buyer ask to cancel after winning or just totally ignore any messages?

If you complete an unpaid strike, then NO FEEDBACK can be left. Whether that means the feedback you left will be removed, I do not know, or whether the fact that you have left feedback will prevent you giving an unpaid strike.
I am afraid that sellers who leave false positives, just help serial non payers get away with it. Just tells other members that not being paid was a positive experience.
The benefit of an unpaid strike just prevents the buyer from leaving you REAL NEGATIVE FEEDBACK.

You can't do this as an afterthought,
If you have a sold item currently and the bidder has not paid, on day 5 you will be able to cancel using 'buyer did not pay'.
You can't go back and do it later.
