I recently made an offer on an item. I did notice that I would have to pay automatically if accepted so just assumed that via Paypal, my preferred payment method, a credit card would be used.
Actually there was a small balance which was used first but the remainder was taken from my bank account.
I only ever pay using a credit card so want to understand how/why my bank was debited. It is not set for making payments.
Not even clear if this is set by EBay or if I have a way to choose how to pay or indeed turn off auto pay before making an offer..
I only discovered this had occurred because I was refunded today. Have checked all settings and cant see how or why this might've occurred. Any suggestions welcome and thankyou.

That's one of the downsides of eBay's new automatic payment on acceptance of an offer. You can't chose how you pay, it has to be either from an eBay balance or from the bank account you have registered for payments.
Like many changes, this was brought about by the misbehaviour of other users. eBay felt it necessary to protect sellers against buyers who changed their minds after making an offer, and wouldn't pay.

You have no choice when paying for an item bought using best offer. It is first from your balance with ebay, then if not enough from bank account.
When you make an offer, if immediate payment is required, then the method of payment is decided by ebay and the means of payment which you would have been asked to provide. If you sell that would be using your bank account.

Nothing to do with ebay,
You have obviously selected bank account as back up on PayPal if not enough money there.
Log into PayPal and change preferences.

Thanks for replying. As mentioned I have checked all my settings in both Ebay and Paypal and actually unless only a bank account and not a credit card is required as back up after using a balance then my preference has been ignored. If on the other hand I had chosen not to check 'use my balance' does this mean that my preferred card would have been used for myy purchase and not my bank. ?

Thanks, so in Paypal only a bank account can be used and not a credit card if there is zero balance in Ebay account. ?

Hi Thanks so much for that perfectly clear reply...most helpful. I just needed to understand how things are with Ebay now...I was just surprised that my preferred Paypal payment method had been ignored, but if Ebay gives no choice I think that will be the last time I make an offer on anything there going forward. Thanks a lot.
