Authenticity Guarantee for Jewellery

Hi

I want to list a ring I own and would like to use the authenticity guarantee for my own protection.  My ring was resized 10 years ago and some of the hallmark was lost can I still use the scheme?

My last insurance valuations states Marks :Tested, Metal Type: 18ct gold, other marks : Hallmark worn . Assay office London.  I have attached a copy of the hallmark that remains - is there anyway I can get a definitive answer as to whether or not it qualifies for the guarantee as I do not want to risk listing the ring and having it sent back

You do not choose to use the Authentication service, ebay rules tell you what requires authentication, and you have to accept their decision.

Without a full hallmark, I would say there is a fair chance it will fail and be sent back to you.

I am a jewellery lover but not a jewellery expert.

However, I do have to say that, looking at your picture, the marks on the ring don't bear any resemblance to a proper UK hallmark so I am fairly certain it would fail authentication.

You can get a new hallmark added by the assay office although obviously that would involve a cost.

Hi

Do you think if I sent the ring to the Assay office to have the hallmark reinstated would that be acceptable??

Kind regards

If you get your ring properly hallmarked at a UK assay office, then it will pass authentication - as long as the rest of your listing, the description etc. are accurate.

As advised, selling with the authenticity guarantee is not your choice.

Items have to be listed for £500 and above in order to qualify.

Yes, that would be acceptable, but if the original hallmark is illegible you may not even know what carat it is until it's hallmarked, and its age may never be known.

From the picture, it appears to be a plain gold band, and very worn. If so, in that condition it's value will probably be determined the weight of gold. There's no point in spending money to prepare it for authentication unless you're sure it's worth at least the £500 minimum price.
