when the first bid is placed it shows at the start price, it doesn't matter how high that bid is

when a  bid is placed by a different bidder the price showing moves to one increment higher than the lowest bid placed

this continues until the auction ends and the item sells at the highest bid shown

the only time this is different is when a seller uses a reserve

if the bids are all below the reserve the item doesn't sell

if someone places a bid higher than the reserve the price showing jumps to the reserve and the bidding continues from that amount.
