does a returned item affect my sale ranking?

i have sold an item which was brand new and factory sealed. i double check my items before posting. the buyer has requested to return the item saying the box was openned. now the question is will this affect my sales? i have noticed i get a lot less sales afterthis issue.

No, it only affects your account if you refuse the return and the buyer has to escalate their claim to ebay.
