a buyer asked me to combine postal charges which I areed to do but they have paid the full amount and I can't see how to refund or add the discount to the invoice

You can make a Partial Refund from their PayPal Paynent . Find Refund and carefully change the amount otherwise you could easily and up giving a Full Refund. You won't receive any PayPal Fee Credit though. Their Processing Fee will be 2.9% + 30p of what your Buyer Paid.
