private listing - bidder identity protected, what does this mean in laymans terms when it comes up on who has bidded,

It's a useless option now as all bidders identities are hidden from others except from the bidder themselves so they know where they are on the list,  and to the seller .  All ID's now are seen as,  for example,   a***4

The private listing was introduced years ago for those buying items of a sensitve nature,  say incontinence pads.  As said ,not necessary to use now.
