I am used to the ebay bidding process. Some things are listed as fixed price but people "watch" the item.
Not sure why.

there are many reasons why people watch buy it now listings,
they watch several similar items to compare the price,
they may have one so are seeing how popular the item is,
they may just be nosy
they are bidding on others and if the bidding goes higher than the BIN on the watched item they buy the BIN instead
etc, etc, etc
