Retracting a bid

Hi.
My son placed a bid on an item and did not realise that it was not working. It is an iPod.
I've contacted the seller twice but no response. It's a genuine mistake. How do I get out of this. It's not a lot of money but it's his own money. He will be upset and I just need advice.

If the seller described it as not working then he has done nothing wrong.  Business sellers are obliged to cancel but private sellers are not.

If the seller won't cancel, and you don't pay, you will recieve a non payment strike. This is the only sure way the seller can get his final value fees refunded, which have already been applied to his account.. Any listing fees he's had to pay will be lost.  Two strikes in 12 months leaves you unable to bid for a year. He may be more willing to cancel if you offer to pay the fees you have cost him.

Descriptions are there for a reason.  Half the problems that occur on ebay are because buyers can't be bothered to read them.
