Payment dispute

Hi,

I'm hoping I can have some help please as I hardly sell on eBay and this transaction has been a nightmare. I posted a digital code I received as an offer with an item I bought from a retailer (I now know these aren't covered under eBay protection etc) for purchase which was bought, I couldn't send this physically as I'd received the code via digital format as well and the buyer has apparently opened a dispute with the financial institution saying it wasn't him.

I have a message from him after the purchase asking for the code which I sent as eBay said the payment was made which now they're disputing. I can't provide a tracking number to challenge the payment but I have the screenshots, I'm wondering if anyone can please help or give advice at all?

I'd like to challenge it as I've read a similar story where the seller won this situation because it's strange that he has the code via message with it being digital and I could end up having nothing. I'm not sure whether the codes been used as I don't want to check either.

I spoke to eBay a few times but they haven't been helpful at all. I just need to know how I could provide screenshots and get past the tracking number phase if possible and if I was to just accept the dispute, will I be out of pocket? I haven't received the funds yet as they're on hold but eBay haven't said whether I'll lose money. I don't want to refund the money from my own bank!

thank you

This shouldn't surprise you, as the sale of items for digital delivery is not allowed here.

The only question is whether eBay treats the item as being covered by their money back guarantee. I think they will, as this doesn't exclude items not permitted for sale. I doubt whether a code counts as "digital content", which is excluded.

If eBay decides the buyer has a valid case you will automatically be required to refund them. They ALWAYS require a tracking number as evidence of delivery, and won't accept a screen shot.
