I ordered an item. Checking on delivery status it now showed "item removed". This stops you clicking on the item so you cannot contact seller etc. Payment was taken from my paypal but I have no way of contacting the seller

Was the item concerning something to do with the Covid19 crisis, masks, sanitisers etc?
eBay are removing all but those who are now allowed to sell them, that is, registered businesses, complying to their policy. It's to stop the many profiteering sellers, who are slowly , thankfully , being wiped out of the site.
You may still receive your item.
If you do not, then log into your Paypal account, on the left select Resolve a Problem, and open a case for item not received. Enter that eBay have removed the item from their site.
Stick with the Paypal case, do not go back to eBay, and do not forget to escalate.
