Importing text from MS Word

When I import text from MS Word to a product description, the text is corrupted. What can I do about this?

don't import from word as it isn't compatible with the ebay listing form

Thank you: that is the conclusion I deduced - which I found totally baffling! MS Word is compatible with nearly everything on the 'Net that requires user input in text. So why has e-bay chosen to be incompatible? Makes no sense; is not 'user friendly'.
