EBay was correct. If you bought something from the US, it's up to you to contact the seller and sort it out.
If you're saying that you didn't realise they were in the US, you can send them a cancellation requst. They may accept it, or they may use eBay's procedure to cancel unpaid items, which would give you an unpaid item strike. Either way, it's all covered in eBay's procedures for problem resolution.
