If you place high bid, unless some one else places a bid, you will win at lowest bid.

If someone else bids, yours goes up in increments until you win or are outbid.

Thanks. So no matter what I put in as a bid, it is not my actual bid, it is just my maximum -- So could I get the item for much less if no one bids near my maximum?

Yes. You could put in £100 as your max but if the start price is 99p and no one else bids you would win it for 99p.
