Cannot pay for items. Keep getting an ID notice that says I can only pay direct

I keep getting an ID notice saying that I can only purchase items by paying direct .I don't owe anything and have adequate funds in my debit account

Do you mean that you are being shown the immediate payment screen?  If so then that is one of the restrictions applied to new or occasional buyers.  Just pay.  As you build up a good track record for responsible buying activities, eBay ease restrictions and then finally lift them completely.  It usually helps to have registered your card on your eBay profile and to have lined your eBay and Paypal accounts.

The immediate payment screen is also shown to people who have too many unpaid item strikes on their account but from what you say, that would not apply to you.
