Can a seller just not allow you to bid with speculation

A seller blocked me from bidding on her stuff because I had retracted my bid from two of her items 5 days before the listing ends. Is this normal on Ebay!
Can ppl not retract bids a week before, and she gave me a reason that I would change my mind and not pay on time based on speculation.

You have only been a member since July and you have 86 retractions against your name!

Do you realise there are strict rules about retractions, and that buyers who retract bids mess up sellers' auctions?

Your seller will have blocked you to stop you bidding and retracting even more bids on her items!

This is the only auction I dealt with her and I kind of don't understand if Ebay has a rule to retract that too 5 days before the ending of a bid why would that mess up anything. Will need to know more to delve further n act accordingly. And as for more ppl seeing n blocking kindly go ahead. I already bought enough this year . Thankyou

Thankyou for pointing me to the right article! I understand this community is pro seller n can give threats like every one will block u,you are unreliable etc etc when I have paid n always kept giving positive feedback to the sellers that were great . So, for the only comment that pointed me to policy n helped me (without being threatening)it would mess up ,thanks n accepted answer. But what about sellers who don't send the items on time,i have tried many times to wait n consider. Maybe i should report more of that since seller's don't consider. Thankyou anyways

Is there a way to stop Ebay from notifying me about outbid, all the more why I retract? If I don't retract an outbid will it affect anything!

So, having now read the policy, how many of your 86 retraction were covered by the limited reasons and how many were invalid and where you had to choose an incorrect reason for the retraction? Changing your mind is not a valid reason, and neither is being outbid.

This board is not pro seller, we are pro members who act in accordance with the rules.

I only retract when outbid. The reason is one seller came back to me demanding higher price when the highest bidder didn't pay. Now,I paid for that as I there can be legal issues?. Another 3 I remember I retracted because seller changed item description . So if I cannot retract when outbid ,can I refuse to pay if seller's highest bidder didn't pay as I if I am outbid 4 days ago at base price why should I pay the highest bidder price. Please advise

You really do not seem to know what you are doing.

If you are outbid then the higher bidder wins. You don't retract your  bid.

If you do then that wrecks the bidding proccess and the price for the seller goes down

You put in the highest amount you wish to pay and then it will go up in increments

If you get outbid then the person that bids higher than you wins the item

If the highest bidder doesn't pay after committing and seller demands I pay that price ,when i have just bid on initial price. Do I have to pay that? Sorry just confused. I have paid a seller in July with buy it now as the highest bidder didn't pay m I thought I would have legal action if I refused. I bid on initial price,not the highest price. Since then I have retracted when outbid. Sorry

Clearly to protect yourself you need to read up on how auctions/eBay works.

One of your comments says -

If a winning bidder does not pay there no obligation on any other bidder to pay.

A seller can offer a second chance to an under [losing] bidder at their highest bid, but they don't have to pay and no one can force them to pay.

You should not be retracting bids at all

If you are not sure you dont bid

You have wrecked all those sellers listings by retracting those bids

I am sure when people on here see how many you have retracted there will be more members blocking you from buy off them

If the sellers had realised they could have reported you for invalid bid retractions

Sooner or later a wise seller will do this and you could face problems 

You seem to think that is what you do

It is not. People should not bid unless they are sure they want the item

It is the only seller you know has blocked you. I am sure many more will have you on their blocked bidders list now they have seen this post ands the number or retractions you have made.


So you have read the policy where it says
Keep in mind that you can't always retract a bid once it's made –if you're not able to retract your bid, you can also try contacting the seller to see if they'll cancel your bid for you.

You seem to be trying to pick out a bit of the policy to suit you.

There are only 3 genuine and allowed reasons to retract a bid

1/ The seller significantly changed the description of the item
2/ You accidentally bid the wrong amount. For example, you meant to bid £20, not £200. In this case, enter the price
you intended to bid as soon as you've retracted the incorrect bid
3/ You can't reach the seller. For example, you sent the seller an email and it comes back undeliverable, or you tried calling the seller and the phone number doesn't work

It's ok they have blocked me or not but can you answer one thing
If I am outbid say on first day of bid and sellers highest bidder didn't pay,can seller demand that money from me the second bidder ,is there a legal action. I have paid one seller for this and since then I have been retracting whenever I am outbid or I see listing changes. So what is the policy on that. Can I refuse if highest bidder doesn't pay?

Yes if the higher bidder retracts
If you are outbid and the highest bidder retracts their bid then you will become the highest bidder

That is on the ebay policy

You should then ask the seller to cancel if you dont want the item but many would not
ebay say not to buy again until that listing ends as you could win it

It woiuld be best not to bid until the item is nearing the end of its time and then put in your highest bid and wait for the listing to end
You would only pay the highest amount you originally bid and no more

It is also one of the reasons what you are doing it wrong

There is no legal action on ebay but the seller can then open a non payment dispute if you dont pay
You get a non payment strike on your account
Two or more and you will not be able to bid on many sellers items as many sellers set their buyer requirements to block bidders with non payment strikes

Thanks I understand if highest bidder retracts,I am winning but I was asked to pay the highest pric of the bidder by seller but I did it anyway as I feared legal action . So I would bid on reasonable items n not retract outbid, as I was doing a lot.

When bidding you can either bid manually or put in the amount you are willing to pay

You can not be made to pay more

You pay the amount on the ebay invoice when the item ends

If the highest bidder retracts and your bid was the next one down then it goes down to that.
It can not make you pay more than your bid
Read the policy and if that does not cover all you need to know then go to the bottom of the page under Site Map and read up on how buying works.

I just don't think its reasonable to ask second highest bidder to pay say 20 when they have bid on 10 after the highest bidder retracts. I have bid on 10 n will pay ten. I will not retract on outbids

Thanks a lot for clearing it up. I was asked once in July to pay like that n I did thinking Ebay will have legal issue opened. Since then i have been retracting on every outbid i have . Clearly that's why it was wrong. I had called Ebay n they asked me to contact seller in July n I paid more than what I bid. Thanks for clarity,I should not have to.

If you dont want an item then dont bid and certainly dont bid and retract as you are wrecking sellers listings

It is not the way to do it

You keep in mind that if the top bidder retracts (which is wrong and against ebay policy and they can be reported for invalid bid retraction) then if you were the next bidder down you would win at the last bid that was made.

If you retract and you are not the highest bidder then the higher bids come down.

That seller should not have asked you to pay that higher amount.

I guess they did not realise there was a bid retraction but they were wrong to ask you to pay the extra amount
If they had opened the non payment then the amount would have been the highest amount yoy had bid and not the highest amount before the bid retraction

They knew there was a back off but said it would be a loss for her. I thought she could have closed down my account by a case hence,paid extra amount outside on PayPal. Hence been retracting outbids ,but I have taken note of what you said n will be following. Also, do I have to put positive feedback on each buy,I do not leave any feedback most times n put good when Good. I put 5 negative as they didn't respond to my messages,some sellers here told me I am not fit for Ebay as I did that. Do I have to put feedback everytime? Sorry not related to this question but just don't want to have another reason to be blocked

All of this seems to have been a big misunderstanding caused by that one seller who did not understand that when there was a bid retraction they could not ask you for the extra.

Sellers can block anyone they wish if they think the potential buyer is going to be a problem
With all those retractions then most would
I and many would block you due to the retractions to stop you bidding if you ever tried.
YOU dont have to be buying from them it is for the sellers to make sure if you were that you would not be able too
Sellers have to protect themselves against some buyers
Now you know how to go about bidding and stop doing retractions the retractions will slowly disappear.

I think we have enough posts on this thread so just take the advice and try and forget about it now

86 bid retractions [a massive amount and you could be banned from buying] simply proves that you are unreliable and no seller would wish to deal with you.

86 retractions is the sign of a habitual auction wrecker.
