I have an issue, where during an auction, a bidder asked me to take back his last bid he had made by mistake.
Due to my lack of knowledge I had no idea how to resolve this and used the eBay online help, and after pressing a few buttons managed to remove his bid.
However, what I didn't know was that he had placed a bid for £60 and at that time the auction was standing at £40+
The next thing that happened was that his automatic bid kept coming in after each time he was outbid and luckily someone bid over his £60 otherwise I would have been stuck having to start all over again!
Im not sure what I did wrong, but surely it should have pulled him out of the race altogether?

It sounds as though you did not cancel his bid properly.
Rather than speaking to CS you would find it much more useful entering Cancel a bid in HELP & CONTACT and reading the answers. CS is more likely to give incomplete or incorrect information.
Looking at the bid history you cancelled a bid correctly, his maximum was £62. There is nothing to show whether he had made any other bids, but on cancellation there were other bidders at the £60 region. Once his bid was cancelled he could not win.
