Auction gone wrong

Newbie...

I came across an auction and I bid the minimum (still very careful). While scrolling I come across exactly the same offer, by the same seller, but the starting bid was way higher. I realise the seller made a mistake, so mail him: this is what I found, I can't undo my bid, but by all means cancel it.
He gets back to confirm he messed up, thanks me for pointing it out and that's he's now trying to get rid of the auction.

Long story short: Auction ended, I won, he asked not to pay because he's trying to sort it all.
Fair enough, that's what I offered in the first place.

But we're now nearly 24h in, eBay has sent a reminder that I have to pay.

Can I be faulted for not paying even with the mail exchange asking me NOT to pay?
He said that if I do pay he'll send me back the money and not what I bought (again, fair enough).

Just wondering what impact on MY account this could have...
I hate NOT paying for something I buy, so this 'open' bill creates anxiety on this end 😉
