I have listed an expensive piece of jewellery on ebay, an engagement ring valued at £7,500 with a starting bid of £2000. I have had an offer of £2,500 which I said I was willing to accept and have ended the auction. The potential buyer has emailed me saying they are buying it as a gift for their son?? and wants me to send it abroad to where he is studying. I have no details for them other than their ebay user name and an outlook email address. They are apparantly now sorting out the paypal payment and will get back to me regarding postage. I asked before giving out paypal details where the ring is being sent to as I have reservations about sending it abroad. I'm concerned that I am going to be had here, could anyone please give me some advice on what to do?
Thanks.
Sorry, but you must be absolutely mad to list that sort of item on ebay.
I cannot see the listing so am not sure if you listed with the correct fully insured postage. In any event the scammers are going to home in on you.
You need to read up on paypal's requirements for seller protection on chargebacks, especially for an item of that value. Have you checked your receiving limit on paypal. Such a payment may well exceed that.
You also run the risk of selling it here and then the buyer opens a not as described dispute and returns a totally different ring. Chances are that e bay would still make you refund. Then you would have to take legal proceedings to get your money back from the fraudulent buyer.
