Re: toothache

I was told my first abcess was due to my previous dentist's not steralizing the equipment properly!! I've suffered with them ever since, lost about 6 teeth all told. I won't let my new dentist do any detailed work to a worn tooth as you can bet soon as I've paid for it all, I'll get an infection, then an abcess and out comes the tooth!!

Hope you are feeling better today Cookie....nothing worse, here, have a hug off me...sympathy smiley.gifgently does it...

Re: toothache

Oooh! I've only once had an abscess & that was when one of my wisdom teeth was coming through, it makes me cringe thinking about it. I ended up having the wisdom teeth removed because there wasn't room for them& they were pushing all my other teeth forwards. Touch wood I still have all my other teeth & only ever needed one filling since. But I can still remember the pain of the abscess , so I really feel for you. Have you tried Corsodyl mouthwash?

Re: toothache

If you were a child in the 1960s or 70s you are likely to have lots of fillings as dentists were paid according to the work they had done. I remember having fillings redone quite regularly as a child and friends and collegues my age say the same.

Re: toothache

I have a mouthfull of fillings being also a child of the 60s, I have 7 crowns and 8 missing teeth, thanks to rubbish dentists who think the only answer is to take them out.

I have just changed to a private dentist because I am fed up with being fobbed off everytime I go to the NHS ones.  I lost a crown at the front and was told there was nothing they could do and I would have to have a small plate. Well I had the plate, it doesn't fit  the tooth is longer than the rest and it makes me gag because it sticks out too much,  when I went to my new dentist they can either put a new cap on to a new post or do a bridge, £500 it is going to cost, but as we have insurance I will only have to pay half. When I went to the NHS dentist he took a tooth out and knocked a crown off at the same time and then refused to do anything about it even though it was his fault, new dentist says no problem to fix will be another £390 but well worth it, I shall have them both done, but leave it a while between visits as it is a lot of money.

I have been to the dentists about 5 times in the last 2 years and have seen a different dentist every time, they keep moving on.

Never again, the insurance is quite a lot for private but we have changed it to start from April so then I wont have to pay anything, so

maybe I will have a sunny smile again before too long instead of a missing tooth.

Sorry rant over.

Sorry meant to say glad you are feeling better cookie

Re: toothache

I was lucky then according to what you've all said, but I also know if it was a choice between drilling& pulling I'd go for pulling , the drilling was more painful , or perhaps it's because of the instant relief of pain in the gum ,ear & throat when it's pulled. Blimey it's making me cringe again. Sorry didn't mean to frighten anyone!

Re: toothache

i have only really had problems the last 4/5 years since my ME kicked in and then when i get really low an abcess or boil  appears in my most vunerable place.which is a choice of three.mouth ,b##bs or down somewhere elseMan Embarassed being diagnosed we diabetis does not help

my dentist is brilliant and i have never seen any other dentist in the last 6 years.all nhs and i could not find fault in any way with the practice i go to.so it sounds like i am quite lucky.

Re: toothache

How long have you been diabetic, very often in its early stages until you have it under control you can suffer with what you describe also your ME doesn't help I'm sure?

Re: toothache

ME was diagnosed about 7 years ago and diabetes 2 years ago.i mostly keep both under control but if i go through any stress or pressure the ME takes controll for a bit and i get boils /abcesses that how it happens.i just have to live with it.

i have now been about 7 hours with no tooth pain so looks like i will get to friday so dentist can take it out.

Re: toothache

boils and abcesses are like coldsores you either suffer or you do not. nothing any body can do apart from not getting to run down.easier said than done.

i once had one on my tonsils and it nearly killed me as it almost closed my wind pipe.thay took my tonsils out 6 days later but i have never had tonsilitis but it would have kept coming back.so i had no choice.

Re: toothache

It seems like cookie says, different people are prone to different things.  I suppose it's all the luck of the draw.  I've never had spots, boils or abcesses or even cold sores, never had a one!   I used to be prone to tonsilitis until I was about 15 but grew out of that.  Never had asthma so I've been quite lucky really.  I've always had bad circulation and varicose veins in my legs though which has stopped me walking far and hardly have any teeth that aren't filled, but otherwise I've been pretty healthy.  Woman LOL

Glad to hear your pain has settled cookie, it'll be a relief to go to the dentist won't it.

Re: toothache

I always think im lucky in that i have never yet had to have a stay in hospital or any operations!!!!!!!!!!!!!. But i think i said before the thought terrifies me!!!!!!!!!!!!!. If i had surgery i have no one to look out for me afterwards really not nearby. I have my brother though and he said he would come and stay. Im sure my friend in my flats would not desert me seeing as we have always said we are there if we are ill or we dont see each other for a few days we always text!!!.

I remember in the sixties having the Mask put on at the dentist for the sleeping gas and i had a terrible dream which i remember to this day. It frightenend me for life of dentists!!!!!!!!!!!!. I actually saw the dentist that did that the other day in the supermarket he looked like an old man now and would not have recognized me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I remember the foot pump drills too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. And they just used a pik instrument to descale your teeth and it was agony afterwards.
