Jean Greenhowe does some lovely pattern books,

I'd suggest her Christmas one,It's full of different projects. The Santa one would be good to start with.

Only three colours, basic garter and stocking stitch and a toy / decoration to show at the end .

Just saw a new knitting magazine advertised on TV - sorry didn't make a note of the name, but would a subscription to a suitable magazine be worth considering?

I've just popped back to recommend looking at knitting mags too. The ones out now will have quick Christmas projects probably with the materials to do some Included.
