I was watching Columbo the other day, where his wife is often mentioned but never seen.
It occurred to me that there are other programmes where a character is never seen. Others that come to mind are Arthur Daley`s wife in Minder and Sheridan, the son in Keeping Up Appearances.
Are there any others, and what sort of actor would be cast in such parts if they were seen, or how do you imagine they would be like.
I imagine Arthur Daley`s wife with a headscarf and housecoat,
Mrs Columbo would be rather prim and proper
Sheridan, a young, camp Graham Norton type

i think Arthurs would be like an older Barbara Windsor, bit sexy but not OTT.
Mrs Columbo would be just an oh so nice lady primly dressed.
I always used to think of Sheridan as Blonde bit Freckly thin sort of boy or man with glasses bit of a nerd mummies boy.

I always thought of Sheridan as being a younger Dick Emery, - You are lovely but I like you character- So obviously camp that no-one would ever say he was straight.
Mrs. Columbo was a quaint mouse who never went out and
Her indoors I always thought of as a bit of a battleaxe.

Nile's wife in Frasier
Meris? Maris?
she was portrayed as such a delicate thing
when you saw Frasiers wife, she wasnt a substantial woman either
so Meris/Maris must have been invisible
in fact she was
Norms wife on cheers, vera
he had a few funny stories about her but she was never shown
and there was a childrens show, with tim allen
the neighbour, Wilson
you only saw his hat or eyes
never his full face
kinda creepy having a neighbour peer over your fence talking to your children but you dont know what he looks like

And the next door neighbours mother in One Foot in the Grave.
