My fave this year has to be Aldi, 99p for 6, they are not sickly sweet lovely deep filling and you can taste butter(not marg) when you bite into the pastry. 10/10 to them

Thanks Dairyview, You have just described a really nice Mince Pie (so long as the pastry is scrummy too).
Aldi appears to be getting some very good reviews just lately. I am going to Google to find my nearest Store, and hopefully make a visit .....

We are going tomorrow but know it will be heaving, it always is at 10am on Sunday. They are doing bottled fruit in fancy jars for £1.99, pears or peaches so im going to make a small hamper up for a dear friend who is 83, she still drives a car and does her own garden, she spoils me by making mince pies;) for when I go to see her.
Ive also tried their own toblerone bars £1.99 I think, that was scrummy so a couple will jump into the basket when im not looking;)

Aldi are brilliant. We are going tomorrow as well. They do a chocolate gateau which is scrummy. Their packs of cup of soup are good and excellent value as well. Last year, I bought two pairs of PJ's from there and they are brill.

Aldi's adverts are stating that in blind tests their christmas pudding beat Harrods and their mince pies beat Waitrose.
Both Aldi and Lidl are coming up through the ranks in their quality and price over the other british supermarkets.
Apart from the fact I have a voucher for Sainsburys this year then I would in the normal course of events use Aldi and Lidl
I would safely say that I agree - buy Aldi mince pies.

I've had the Christmas cake from Aldi and I thought it was lovely.

I've seen two different ones in Aldi; the Holly Lane ones are good, but the others probably are as well! Sainsbury's ones from the bakery dept are nice.

Homemade are best, cheat a little, buy ready rolled puff or shortcrust pastry, about £1 and a jar of mincemeat also about £1.00 grate a little orange rind into the mincemeat before putting the tops on and you should get a dozen out, dont forget to sprinkle a little brown sugar on the top to give a nice crisp crust. Yum Yum.
We don't have an Aldi anywhere near us so going there is out. Have tried the other supermarkets, most of the big ones mince pies are made in the same factories just have different packaging.

the best mince pies?...mine!!!! OH won't eat any other, mind you I make my own mincemeat, so I can control the sugar in it.
I love Aldi I shop in there all the time. We have to watch some of the prices as some have sneaked up and with my discount from work I can get some stuff for a better price and get my clubcard points too.
Their stollen, and most specialist Christmas type cakes are lovely, and their chocolate, and their truffles, and their...ooooh I could go on!!!

Ooooh, Aldi sounds an excellent Store to visit, providing you can get in!! LOL
Thank you,

Yes I agree too Aldi ones are lovely, but you can't beat home made.
The best I have ever tasted is my mother in laws home made but sadly she isn't with us any more. I know the recipe just don't seem to make them come out quite the same.
Her recipe is one that came from a cook (OH's graandmother I think) from the days when she was in service, years ago.
The principle was 1/2 fat to flour but instead of a mix of marge or butter and lard the fat was all lard, a pinch od salt to bring out the flavour and not too hot when cooking, you can tell when cooked because the shortcrust pastry would like like it has risen to about double. Of course make them deep so you have plenty of mincemeat in them, then sprinkle a little icing sugar over the top.
Delicious, and the best taste there is IMHO.
Although I am a cake baker and decorator, mince pies are one thing that I just cannot master to my satisfaction, I can make them yes, but the never come out nice.

A few weeks ago, Aldi opened a brand new store on the other side of town from me. As my Goddaughter and her family live near to the new store and we went to visit them last Saturday, we went into the new Aldi and it's brilliant. We will be going to the one we normally use tomorrow though as that is on a retail park and there are other shops we want to go into.

And the thing with home made is, especially if you love them that much.....you can make them all year round.
I just love a mince pie and custard or cream for my Sunday pud. As I don't actually celebrate Christmas it really doesn't matter to me when I fancy one.

We have an Aldis but i went up there once when they just opened and did not think much of it. I have to try it again as they probably have more stuff in there now.
Dare i say i like Sainsburys Basic Mince pies. I like very light Mince pies not burned top ones. And lots of sugar on top. And definately not puff pastry ones. I have yet to buy some and love them with ice cream yummy yummy.

I have always mede my own but discovered the Co-op basic ones, better than their "superior" ones. Walkers of Derby are super also, got some the other year in the Pound Shop..............must have been a cancelled contract.
By buying them I can limit my intake whereas when there are tins full.....
I got some Stevia for my husband to replace sugar cos he is also type 2 diabetic. Read somewhere that it can act like insulin and lower the count too much if you over use !...have a Google
