THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

Rainy  I have a sewing machine, but I keep messing it up, cotton getting tangles, bobbin going bonkers etc.  My grandmother was a seamstress and did sewing for the local gentry, from curtains to wedding dresses, my mother makes all her own curtains and takes in clothes and lets them out and fixes zips, my greatgrandmother was a Honiton lace maker, one aunt quilts the most beautiful quilts in the US and my other aunt knits like a demon.  Something went wrong with me!, my grandmother was not impressed that I didn't get the sewing gene.

I love knitting but I think that if I came home with more wool, I'd get a good deal of earache from my mum.  I'd get something along the lines of 'What did you need that for?'  Another thing is that my left thumb isn't to clever at the moment.

Before my accident I made all the youngsters clothes - started off with babygrows, dungarees, baby dresses, sun bonnets, beanie hats, shorts, T shirts etc. Moved on to daughter's sports kit, blazers, uniform skirts and blouses. Made jog trousers for the lads, sports shirts, sweatshirts, anoraks, fleeces, cagoules, pyjamas etc. I made curtains, pelmets, tie backs, duvet covers, pillowcases etc.

I struggle even with simple mending now, and cutting out is impossible.

It's years since I've done any sewing.  I think the last thing I made was a fleece for Steph when she was about 8.  She loved it.

My apologies Ed Woman Embarassed  I just take it for granted that people can sew.  I am one of three sisters, who all could sew and knit, each to varying degrees.  The youngest, however, was very talented from a young age, she could do anything.  I was so skinny as a girl/young woman. she would run me up what I guess would be called a sheath dress now, with a side zip, overnight, no pattern.  She worked for Coats/Paton designing knitting patterns and made her own wedding dress.  Very Pre-Raphaelite, cotton, big bell sleeves, train, and she embellished it herself.  With her long red hair in a plait down her back she looked like something out of a painting.  She was some girl.

I'm the one in the middle, not a great seamstress, but whisper, I quite like making curtains and soft furnishings.  I take after my mother, we would get up in the morning and she would have made new curtains for the living room.  She was like Stroppy, and made all our clothes.

BUT. I.can.not.crochet.  Can Not.  I am like you describe yourself with the sewing machine, end up with a big knotty mess, my Granny used to despair of me.  But I bet there are loads of things you are good at, even if the sewing gene passed you by. Rainy heart

I always think that we can't all be good at everything.  I'd love to be able to draw and paint but I can't to save my life.

I can draw and paint, probably better with practice, it's been a while!

I can sew little things, and could probably tackle curtains if I had the space to put the fabric.

but I cannot knit properly, I would love to be able to do all those knots and cables in aaran knitting. or fairaisle, I love that.

each to their own as they say

I made this kimono jacket yesterday for practice with fabric I already had. It does look better on. The next one will be in nicer fabric & be a little longer. Handy for the holidays.
