I wont go into too many details but at the moment I am in "correspondence" with HMRC over supposed overpayments in tax credits from 2008. I keep sending them letters, recorded delivery, asking them for ABSOLUTE PROOF that I owe this money. Needless to say they have ignored all my requests = only ever received letters and no actual breakdown etc. Letters are not proof, I need a breakdown and evidence.
I received a call today asking me to call them which I did. After speaking to a nice chap he said I needed to call another number....I have tried this number THREE times each time was on hold for TWENTY FIVE minutes without actually speaking to a human being. How the heck that I solve this problem without the intervention of a human. all I kept getting were different menus (which is a joke in itself).
Can anybody shed any light on how I can actually get through to them, without holding on. I cant afford to keep doing this.
Any suggestions welcome. They are getting me to boiling point as I am doing everything in my power to do as they asked!
Needless to say I am completely disputing this matter anyway as I have ALWAYS updated them so cannot understand how they can have over paid me.

is ther a local tax office you can take stuff into?
maybe trying the guy who gave you the number again and ask if there is a different number for it
did you try pressing a different number constantly see if that wakes up a human like 99999 or 00000

Towery............that is super advice as we do have an HMRC office (regional) one in my nearest city and yes possibly a trip down there would be more efficient....well done and many thanks.
I did feel like pressing 999 - but only because I was at the point of committing hari kari LOL

I have an accountant, he deals with HMRC, I stay sane(ok sane and I don't mix in reality).
The last time I rang HMRC for advice was about them paying me for a tax refund an employee was due that was for 4 times our monthly paye payments!. After half an hour or so(at my cost) the guy gave me the full web address of the required form. I looked, disbelievingly, rang the accountant who laughed her socks off and who rang me back later with the details of the right form. I then filled the form in and the automated response said i would receive a response within 2 weeks. Nearly 3 years later i am still waiting said response. The hilarity?
The form I was told to use was for payment of maternity pay.
The employee due a tax rebate was a hulking 6'6" male(and yes they knew)!..
LOL
