Sunday Lunch

Just wondered how many of you still sit down to a traditional roast today ??????

When the children were small I always made sure that we all sat down at the dinner table together to eat our roast and this has continued throughout the years.

Today I am as usual doing a beef with all the trimmings and 5 of our kids plus now their families and my mother and brother will be turnig up to sit down and discuss the weeks events , our highs, our lows and just generally spending a few hours enjoying each others company.

I only ask as my DIL thinks this is a very odd and old fashioned thing to do (think she would rather be shopping).

I also always plate 2 dinners for a couple of local pensioners who are by themselves and one for my MIL (can't cope with the hustle and bustle of the pub) and Miss S will deliver them when we are finished.

So is DIL right and this is something I should stop doing as wouldn't want them to feel obliged to turn up just always thought they enjoyed it as much as I do ??

My Mum did notice that I only read 12% of the first one!

Re: Sunday Lunch

I have to agree with those who say its rather tame , read about a third of the first one & got bored with it .  But i did live my teenage years in the '1960's 😉

Re: Sunday Lunch

Well, didn't feel like doing a roast dinner today, so have just made a quick Beefy Cobbler. It is just finishing off in the oven now, and will all have that with Jacket spuds 🙂

Re: Sunday Lunch

I have always cooked Sunday Lunch and when my children were young, we'd all sit and eat as a family every weekend and most week nights depending on ex hubbies work hours.

I think eating together as a family is sooooo important. It gives everyone the chance to catch up with each other and to really communicate, not just about the weather, but really communicate 🙂

I think it's very sad now that families are kind of all over the place, even with eating, I know that it's so much more difficult now with Mums sometimes having to work, it's really tough trying to get it all to gel together I would imagine.

But, for me, family time is golden, we all need it, not just the kids, but all of us, it gives us that sense of belonging 🙂

I still do cook roast dinners most Sundays, but it's usually me, OH and my neighbour, but still fun though.

PS........I have never read any of the 50 shades, it has honestly never interested me at all.

Re: Sunday Lunch

I've just had another thought.................rare I know 😐

Here in the UK I don't think we use eating as a social event anywhere near how they do in France, Italy and other places around the world.

They celebrate food, drink, and the family at every meal time. Eating is a real big social event for them, I think us Brits have lost that, if we ever had it in the first place.

A friend of mine who was a chef, lived all over, but mainly in Spain and he said that sometimes their meals would go on for hours 🙂

I'll never forget when me and OH went out for a meal at a restaurant a few years ago...........we had only just eaten our starter when the waitress came up, whipped our plates from under our noses at the speed of light, then promptly ran off, came back, armed with our main course! :O........so we ate that, and at five minute intervals, the waitress came and asked if everything was okay, those plates were then whipped from under us once again and she thrust the desert menu in front of our faces :|...........OH then said to her "Sorry, could we just slow down a bit do you think? We'll call you over when we've decided if that's okay"!!!!................................it was all about "bums on seats" they know the quicker they move you, the more people they can serve............but what about the personal touch??.........needless to say, we never went back there again, was like being on a conveyor belt 😐
