Well, I have still got rats! It appears to me that they have made their home under my shed (I'm saying "they" because there probably is more than one) We have blocked any gaps in under the shed, but the rats have started gnawing the peices of wood we have put there, then pushing them out of the way. I've now put some boulders in front of the pieces of wood. Now, my problem is this - we are pretty sure the rats are coming from a neglected house 2 doors away, as a rat has been seen on their drive. If I go to the expense of getting the council out and they kill the rats that are here, will I still get them from the neighbours house? We speak to these people but they would deny they had rats. They have just had the garage done up and a few jobs done and we think that the rats were there and got disturbed.
I'm going to get some cayenne pepper as was suggested to me to sprinkle around. Sorry this is a bit long. Would appreciate any input about if I will still get rats coming in. Thanks in anticipation.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you now have no choice in the matter.
You must get the council in fast!!!!!
If a rat has found somewhere nice and warm and is nesting it means that they will also be breeding. 2 rats can become over 100 rats in less than 6 months (google rats breeding if you are in any doubt).
Rat pee is highly poisonous and can cause all manner of unspeakable diseases, some of which can kill humans, and they are especially deadly to children.
If you have children/grandchildren do not let them in the garden until you have this sorted.
The good news is, if the rats are coming from 2 doors down, then they will be liable for the bill for their removal.
Only the council's pest control have trhe right poisons that need to be laid and the correct knowledge and experience as to know what to do and how to do it.
Worst case scenario is, if you have to pay, the bill would be around £180.00 for a full course of treatment to eliminate the rats.
Please call the council now before it gets out of control and you are overrun!

I have made an appt for the council to come out with bait boxes; earliest they can come is Friday. So annoying that the rats have moved to this garden from 2 doors away and we have to bear the cost. Main thing is getting rid of the horrible things and keeping my dogs safe from them. They give me the creeps. Every time I go into the garden and hear a noise, I jump.

We had a rat, once upon a time. OH disturbed it and it flew off in the direction of next door, we heard a quick yap and crunch(puppies eat anything LOL) and have never seen one since.
As somebody else says, get the council involved and mention, mention, MENTION where you think they are coming from because they will just keep coming.
Years back the bakery at the top of the terrace shut down, the displaced mice and the mouse traps went the whole way to the bottom of the hill. LOL

If they are coming to your house make sure you tell them that you have seen them 2 doors down, otherwise they will just keep coming to yours and you won't get rid of the problem, personally I don't think you should bare all of the cost.

One more night then the rat man (sorry - "pest controller!" ) will be here to lay bait for the little sods. Fed up of being jumpy every time I go into the garden; also want to be able to let the dogs out unsupervised - eventually. The bait boxes will be in place until 20 December. I seem to have successfully blocked them from going under the shed, but have noticed new burrows again this morning where they have gone under next doors decking and to the house at the back of us. Had a word with one neighbour who has said there is no point her blocking any holes in as the rats will just cllimb over the fence to get in. Would be nice if we could all work together on this, seeing as we are the ones who are paying out for the service that others are going to benefit from! Think its very unfair, but that's people for you. Surely we ALL need to make it as difficult as possible for the rats to get in to the gardens.

Hurray!! 2 bait boxes are now in place. The pest controller said its unfair that everyone benefits from the rats being caught and yet we are the ones paying out; he said everyone should club together. No chance!! Anyway, lets hope the rats will be caught; I've been told to stop feeding the birds, so will do, which is a shame really.

Definately stop feeding the birds My mother in law had a bird feeder on the tree just outside her house and one day she looked out of the window and thought she saw 3 squirrels hanging of the feeder on closer inspection it was 3 rats....she called the council out and they told her that there were 2 rat holes not far from the tree and they were there because of the food source...she was gutted because she loved feeding the wild birds.

The Pest Controller was here this a.m. to check the bait boxes, the rats have eaten plenty. I just had to share this with you though as I can't stop laughing about it. Just as the man was opening the first bait box, an ornamental squirrel (plastic) toppled over onto my foot; not realising what it was, I screamed, the pest control man jumped out of his skin and said I nearly gave him a heart attack! Poor man!
