Sad.  I always loved his voice. Sheffield Steel was a great album to croak along to driving to work in the early 80s.

His neice Jane used to work where I do; he once did a personalised autograph for another member of staff, a fan, at her ( Jane's ) request without the other member of staff being aware of it until she ( Jane ) delivered it.  More than made her day...
