Plants on Balcony

Can anyone tell me are Geraniums, Rosemary, Lavender, Nemesia, Cordelyn ( a spiky red thing). Are they dangerous if cats chew them?. Also pepper plant. Red Bottle brush plants and Alpine plants?. i have to look up about them but i do not know a thing about gardening and have just had a relative put some lovely plants on my balcony. Sometimes my cat eats dirt but not normally plants. Does anyone know any that are dangerous or poisenous?. i just want to be careful. Thank you. 🙂

Re: Plants on Balcony

I would Google 'Is ****** safe for cats' for each plant you have. That should give you the information.:-)

Re: Plants on Balcony

Yes my brother, screened my balcony so i can sit privately outside and so the pussycat cannot go anywhere. Then brought me pots and plants to put there too. Its a lovely thing to do. It looks really nice now, not so bare and dull looking. Makes me feel a little better.

Thank you yes i will look at those things to find out. Yes i think i heard lilies were dangerous. my cat seems to favour the dirt over the plant, she has a penchant for licking up any stray hairy dirt anywhere out there. Very strange ?:|. Shes having salmon at the moment. Lucky girl ha ha.

All my  outside plants benefit from a water spray as it mimics rain. But NOT when the sun is on them or the suns rays act on the pearls of water like a prism and burns the leaves..........

Re: Plants on Balcony

Thank you , i need some more advice?. I have Lavender and Rosemary which i love. Do i just cut the tops off if it grows too tall?, as the Rosemary is shooting up alreaydy and i do not want to ruin it. Is it ok just to pick it with my hands?. ( i will obviously make use of it its so sweet smelling). Any gardeners out there. Help??. 🙂

Re: Plants on Balcony

I know with the lavendar, let it flower, pick the heads off to dry and use as you want. Then give it a good haircut, you can use scissors to do this, cut off about half the growth. This will encourage better growth next season.

Not sure about the rosemary, I planted one but I've let it run riot and it's being choked by two chive plants.;\

Re: Plants on Balcony

I let my Rosemary run riot too but it does get a bit woody. I would treat it like Lavender & give it a haircut late summer.:-)

Re: Plants on Balcony

I would invest in a some plant food. Miracle Grow is good so whilst the plants are growing at this time of year, put some in their water once every two weeks or so. Don't let the compost dry out completely before watering either. Water either in the morning or later in the day when the sun has gone down.

Your cat will be fine with all those plants as they can smell if something isn't good for them. Cats like to eat "grass" so that's why your cat eats some earth as it's the nearest substitute to it... Lily's are a danger to them though so best keep away from having a lily plant.

Enjoy them! 🙂

Re: Plants on Balcony

OOh thank you lhasa.one. Yes i water in evening. I caught my cat taking a mouthful of dirt out of one of the pots the other night. I was sitting right there in front of her and told her off. Ha Ha. She s funny i have a ledge down low by the window and she will go along it licking all the dirt and cobwebs up. Ha Ha, then has it all round her mouth like a beard. LOL.

Thank you. ((( )))  :-x
