As regulars on here will know, I lost my beloved Poppy a month ago tomorrow. Just seen a neighbour and told him, to be met with the stupid comment, "You've got 2 more!" What is the matter with these people, don't they realise that each dog is an individual and greatly missed. He's probably one of the "It's only a dog" brigade. If he lost a sister, I wouldn't turn round to him and say you've got some more. To those of us without children, for whatever reason, our dogs ARE our children. They do make me cross.

I don't think people withoit pets realise the bond that is forged between animal & owner.

And if they don't that's their loss. They don't know what they're talking about. Don't let it upset you.

Every animal is an individual in its own way, even the cheeky robin who comes around to see what's happening when you're gardening, and to lose that contact with another sentient thing is upsetting
I like the OP's remarks about losing a sister though...

Yes you are probably right, Maggie. If I wasnt still hurting so much over her loss, I would probably find it easier to make allowances.

any chance he meant you have 2 more to help you through?
there are a lot of stupid people but not many are intentionally mean
especially when they know someone is upset
he is probably kicking himself at sounding tactless

Sadly all of us who have had pets have known the loss of a loved one and it hurts, we still get misty eyed over our beloved Donna our first dog who died 17 years ago, it took us 9 years before we felt ready to have another one, now we have 2 but we never forget her.
A young lad at work in his early 20's lost his beloved boxer last week and he went to pieces he had had him when he was a young boy and was terribly upset, so upset they sent him home from work and even the boss was sympathetic, I was gobsmaked.
It will take time and you won't ever forget Poppy, and nor should you,
Some people have good intentions and things come out wrong, and some just don't understand.
Chin up and keep smiling.

I do not profess to be a dog or cat lover but that comment appalled me would never dream of saying anything like that as although not an animal lover I know how much they can mean to somebody.

That's so insensitive 😞
Try not to let comments like that upset you - the person clearly has never had a pet to love - their loss!
I miss the lovely robin Robbie who was here over the winter - I hope he/she comes back (do they do that?)
We now have Pidgey who I don't love, I have to admit, but it is nice to have a regular visitor even if it is a cheeky pigeon.
A dog is a friend, a companion.... I understand that even though it's a long time since we had one ourselves. xx

Many years ago when I lost my 4th child shortly after birth, you wouldn't believe how many people said to me at least you've got other children, as if I shouldn't have been bothered about the one I lost.

Ahh Marg, how awful for you. I don't think some people think what they
are saying at all and, whilst they mean to offer comfort at such a sad time,
they end up doing exactly the opposite. I always think if I can't think straight
enough on hearing sad news to say something sensitively, then I'll say
just enough to show I care then think about exactly how I'm going to
say any more.
Carolyorkie, try not to worry too much, some people just don't understand
just what a bond we have with our much-loved animals. Some people just
seem unable to word things sensitively but I'm sure that most wouldn't
intentionally offend.
I''ve had the "it's only a cat" thing said to me when we lost Paws Cat at
21 years, we've had people say when we found we were unable to have
children, "never mind, you can always adopt" - which is in fact what we
did but it wasn't quite how we wanted to hear it after fifteen years of
trying and IVF etc.
Some people seem to manage to kick us when we're already down with
no intention of doing so and without even realising that they have.

On the other hand, after losing Amber at the age of 13, everyone has sympathised.
No insensitive remarks at all.
