with that mahooosive gust of wind last night, the fence panels got lifted up in the air and blown across the garden, landed in front of the kitchen window!! This morning we have 50 tiles replaced on the roof, 7 fence panels gone awol, some of my lovely planters smashed to bits, and the outside plastic sheds which were screwed to the wall of the bungalow, are in pieces and all the contents spilled all over the side path!!! Gawd! the mess. Poor OH has had to phone his mate to come and help him clean up as I am otherwise detained as a mad cabing fevered loonie in the house and I can't get down the step!!!!
Oh woe is me

Got my roof fixed now; don't know where they get their prices from though. At least I can rest easy now when the wind is blowing.

It's blowing a gale again here and it's also pouring down and it's cold.
Hope that everyone is safe. As has been said, at least property can be repaired and replaced. With humans, it might take a lot longer for them to be repaired and they can't be replaced.

Well we've had wind and rain all month. Today was torrential rain with winds forecast for tonight but hopefully most trees and fences are down. Haven't had the hurricane force winds the North had(mostly 9s and 10s) but well remember the hurricane in 198? - devastation everywhere and my parents ramshackle ole house with a chimney with holes in(lined up in a terrace of similar) came through it unscathed with all of us and neighbours outside wondering how the old houses had when newer ones hadn't(proved the adage - survived the Germans will survive anything). You have my sympathy up there.

The chap I know who had part of his roof blown off on Wednesday has had emergency repairs done and his SIL will fix it properly on Monday. He's also going to get rid of his greenhouse as about 9 or 10 panes of glass were broken.

I see my bedroom window made the news, last picture down the page

It's a bit unnerving seeing bricks crashing down past the window.

bill for the roof will arrive on Sunday.....bless him, they don't rush here in this village...still waiting for a bill off his dad for work done when we first moved in 18mths ago...he moved a washbasin for us!!! We expect it to be £200 plus, as he replaced so many tiles.
Aye, you can't replace your loved ones that's for sure.
It's blowing a gale here now as I type....lets hope the electric stays on.
it's funny but my mate just a little bit further down than us had no signs of bad weather at all while we were getting battered!!!

we paid out £440 just before Christmas for roof repairs, now have lost a few more slates! Our biggest problem is getting someone to do the work, tradesmen (or even handymen) are as rare as hens teeth in this area. We still have to dispose of the 4 trees that fell in the garden before Christmas, plus repair the fence, so looks like spring time is going to be busy for us! We have been lucky so far up here in Scotland it's very wet and muddy everywhere but nothing compared to the poor people in the south. Surely it must improve soon.

Our bill was £504 to replace 2 ridge tiles and re-cement the remaining loose ones (about 10 tiles.) Couldn't shop around for quotes as all the roofers were busy and it had to be done asap before the tiles fell onto the conservatory.

Guess the more damage around the higher the prices will get. I just wonder what will happen to insurance premiums after all this lot because the insurers won't lose out, it will be us that have to pay for the repairs whether we have made a claim or not.
14-02-2014 8:51 PM
It's like CB said, it is the cost of excess on insurance policies these days but I've no doubt that premiums will only go in one direction and that's up.

That sounds nasty CB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... There will be damage all over by the time this weather is through!!!!!!!!!!. TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!.

Can you sell those - to people with wood-stoves? Sort of come and chop up your own? (I've seen a whole garden for sale on here - buyer to come and dig up all the plants!)
15-02-2014 6:40 PM
We've still got loads of wood from the 1987 storm!!
15-02-2014 6:52 PM
People do buy it. Most of it looks ready chopped, but there are some lumps of tree about a quarter of the page down that sold.

duck_a_lorange, you're probably right about it. But sometimes it's not so easy to remove all the asbestos roof by yourself, and that's why you should count on professionals, in my humble opinon. Anyway, here is a resource, that I found among all other roofing-related resource about asbestos roof removal process, and what you should do while you're making any kind of roofing process. Such articles can be really helpful during any renovation of the house.
