I find it hard to believe that anyone would pay money into an account without finding out the name on the account.

I have had occassion to pay money into a friends account.

If I just give the bank the sort code and account number, they will ask me the account holders name

OK, if you think your own bank account is at risk, take out the money, but hang on to it until you have opened another account in your own name.

If we just simply read the news, maybe it's hard to believe. But I think what makes people fall into this cheap trick is because some people are still unaware of scams and just believe everything they heard. If you read some stories people share at callercenter you can see how actually those fraudster using various ways to lure their target. 

However, I agree that we should be careful in proceeding any information we received, especially when it comes from someone we don't even know. Better safe than sorry.
