My ginger cat went out for a wee this morning and has returned absolutely
covered in oil. He doesn't appear injured, he was his usual self when he
came in, hungry, offering each paw for a handshake, purring and nuzzling
himself around me.
I'm frightened he will become ill from licking off the oil though, I'm trying to
get hold of vet who aren't open yet.
I don't want to use detergent on him as he might get ill from that too.
Honestly, he looks like a tortoishell cat instead of a ginger one, I've no
idea what he's been doing!
Has anyone got any brilliant ideas please?

Sorry folks, panic over, I've just got hold of the vet who says take him in at 9.30
as they reckon he might need a professional clean-up.
Off to catch him now.

I don't know fishie, but as no one else seems to either, my advice would be to prevent him from trying to groom himself at all costs and get the vet on the phone as soon as you can. I would have thought there would be someone there at this time of day.
Good luck to you and pusscat.

Our little darling got like that once, and luckily we had one of those bucket thingys that go over their heads, so we put that on and put her in the sink with washing up liquid then rinsed her off and blow dried her. I ended up with scratches up my arms, she wasn't the most friendly of cats. She had been under my car which had an oil leak, it had been in for an oil change and the numpty at the garage didn't put the sump plug back in properly, so in a way she did me a favour because I might not have noticed.
Hope ginger cat is ok.

Thanks for all your replies everyone.
Well Fistral is back home after his visit to the vet and the resulting bath. I understand
all members of staff still have the right number of fingers! He looks all beautiful again
and they said he's fine. I'm worse off financially though, but he's worth it!
Apparently they use swarfega or fairy liquid with sugar in it to get the oil off. Hopefully
it'll come off son's duvet cover which is where he went and hid after it happened.
It may have come from the people at the back as they had their car in bits all over the place
yesterday. I know they wouldn't have deliberately hurt our cat as they are cat mad and have
three of their own, but they may have spilt some oil and not realised.
He's alright now, that's the main thing.

Rub washing up liquid well into the duvet cover before you wash it.

i'd be on the lookout for any oil, mention to the neighbours, if its just laying around other animals may not be as lucky
if its the omes over the back with a car in bits i hope they drained the antifreeze off safely too
