Food Bank,

Today I have been sorting out the information for the Food Bank collection at work, our department is only 5 people and we all put in £2.00 and this morning I went around the shop and put together a load of tins and dried goods, picked things that were on offer and used some vouchers and my staff discount. Had about £15.00 worth of shopping for a tenner. On my way home I put it in the trolley at the front of the store. I left at 8.30 and already there was half a trolley, people are very generous.

So sad that in this country and the year 2013 people don't have enough money to buy food.

Re: Food Bank,

Well done Ed and your work colleagues. I was in Asda the other week and there was a collection. I am on JSA and can hardly afford to feed myself and my son but I did buy one tin of baked beans and put it in the trolley....you never know who will need the food bank next - you or any member of your family.

My village has just opened one up as well, so not just the inner cities that are needing food banks now but little villages. Even people in employment may need them.

I am lucky in that family and friends often buy two for the price of one so I get the free one.

I also buy only from the reduced section - indeed my christmas dinner was purchased today from Lidl - a large chicken reduced by nearly 50% down to £3.50 - when used it will feed us for christmas day and probably for another two meals if used wisely.

My freezer is getting really full now - really from careful use of the slow cooker - getting cheap meats and padding out with lots of veg etc.

Again a very well done to you and your work colleagues - it will be much appreciated I am sure 🙂 x

Remember - it takes 17 muscles to smile and 44 muscles to frown - SO KEEP SMILING 🙂

Is sad but well done to Ed and your work colleagues.

I try and pick up something each week that is on offer for the food bank .

I won a tin of chilli con carne in a raffle on Wednesday so the food bank will benefit Woman Wink

Re: Food Bank,

Yes, well done Ed.they were in our store today  I got a couple of bits and bobs and put them in the trolley. It drives me nuts to think that in this day and age people are having to use food banks to survive on.

I remember last Christmas, making mince pies in my nice warm kitchen listening to the radio, when this topic came up. I was in tears, there I was having a jolly time, and some people couldn't even afford a chicken for their Christmas dinner......

this world is so unjust................................

Re: Food Bank,

What we do or rather what my mum does is cooks six Christmas dinners on Christmas day.  We obviously have one each on Christmas day and the others do for boxing day and the day after.  When we do a food shop, we always look cheapies and what's on offer.

There's a fruit shop in town that charge £1.54 per kilo for bananas.  A little way further down is M & S where bananas are £0.68 per kilo.  Needless to say where I get our bananas from.

Re: Food Bank,

The rule in our house is at least 3 items per week for the food bank (more if it can be managed). If there is a bogof on something we are buying then the free one will be the one for the food bank. Mostly staples from the basics range, but if there is a bit of extra money left at the end of the week it will be used to buy something like coffee or corned beef for the food bank.

Re: Food Bank,

that's an excellent idea Stroppy, I think I'll do that, although I have no idea where our foodbank is, it was just that they were collecting in our store this weekend.

Re: Food Bank,

Our local council office has a huge collection box by the door - I just put all the stuff for the food bank in there. Obviously it has to be tins / packets, no fresh stuff. I assume that they split it up between all of the organisations who privide the service.

They have a big banner outside with this on,,, would they mean for homeless and needy people?????????????????. I know lots of homeless people visit there. I have always wanted to do one of those volunteering on Christmas day or something dishing up dinners and so forth i think its a lovely thing to do for people who are genuinly in need!.

Re: Food Bank,

Rose - have a go at googling "food bank" followed by your local town - you should find a list of the organisations and what they do and there should be contact details so that you can ask about volunteering or donating.

Re: Food Bank,

Do you iknow what, people on here (and doubtless elsewhere too) are so lovely, so

generous and so caring.  It never ceases to amaze me what you lot do for others,

even people (and I'm not being rude here) who haen't really got spare money, they

manage to spare some for those less fortunate.

I feel quite humbled by it and, although I do stuff, I must do more.

It is very, very sad that there is so much need both in our country and in the world,

I don't know where they'd all be without these lovely people who think of others

before themselves.

The only collection in our supermarket is the one for the animal rescue, where

people donate amimal food, but I will look out for foodbank collection too.
