My DIL breeds Rotties & feeds them raw chicken wings. She has never had a problem. I would only give a dog raw bones of any kind myself, never cooked ones.

Well I'm No Bones allowed where my dogs concerned because she totally eats the lot, very occasionally I will relent but then her poo comes out full of splinters ........ goodness knows what it does to her insides but her rear must get sore 😮
I would think a small dog would be ok to have them though as there teeth wouldn't be strong enough to bite chunks off like mine does :^O
I think these marrowbone type things you can buy from pet shops must be boiled in bleach judging by how white they are 😐

i guess as long as its being watched and not left alone with it
and the bone is still in fairly good shape he wont come to much harm
i'd rescue the bone from the garden and bin it without the pup knowing

A beef knuckle bone raw from the butchers is what mine likes but they are messy & stink. She doesn't chomp them up she just gets all the revolting bits off & licks the marrow. She only has them once or twice a year! lol

He just eats the meat off it and get the marrow bone out - he isn't really big enough to chew lumps off the bone itself as the bone is pretty big..........
30-04-2013 10:22 PM
Then I think he should be allowed to enjoy it :-x

I shouldn't think it would do him any harm then.:-)

I wonder how Lottie is getting on with CG's hip?

NOOOOOOO!!!
NEVER EVER give Lamb Bones or cooked chicken bones as both splinter. Cooked Lamb bones will be even worse sorry to say
The only bones that should ever be given are beef bones, raw or cooked are both fine.
Raw Chicken bones are fine too but as I have big dogs they don't get those either tbh
One thing I will say, is if you have small children about, please be very careful as dogs can get really possessive with a bone. I've seen usually placid dogs turn to demons with a bone!

Sorry should have said Beef bones crumble hence why they are better

Mine only ever get the raw beef long bones as well, mainly because if I get them from my local M*rr*s*ns there's usually a fair chunk of meat still attached & they like to gnaw to get every morsel off! Local butcher gives them away but there's hardly any meat on those plus I hate going in there - hate the smell of meat 😞
As an alternative, try deer antlers. We've had discussions about these before & being an animal lover, I had to think long & hard over this but I decided that these were a by-product of the venison trade & would probably only get used for walking stick handles or get thrown in the bin so I could justify using them. They don't splinter like bones & the dogs love them, plus, once they lose their taste, just soak them in hot water for half an hour or so & it somehow comes back. Obviously, once they get chewed into small bits, these then go in the bin for safety but they do last for ages.
There is a firm who supply these but they charge mega bucks & the name escapes me at the minute. Can't post a link in here but pm me if you want a reputable (dog lover!) supplier 🙂

I have an antler & damson can't even dent it! Do they get softer when soaked?

Not sure why you had to think "Long and Hard".......
Deer shed their antlers every year so they are not necessarily a by-product of the venison trade....

My MIL's dog had to have surgery after a cooked bone damaged her insides thankfully she was ok. My old dog [sadly no longer here] used to get amazing vomiting when ever he had a raw bone he only ever had them twice because I forgot what happened the first time!
I would never give bones now I just don't think its worth the risk there are plenty of safe treats that they enjoy just as much.

My pup is too stoopid for a bone, he buries chews and treats in my ironing pile. I think I will avoid bones for him
