Hi there, we have a Terrano, I drive it but not often, I think they are like all cars just take time to get to know the controls etc and you will be fine. The Terrano has seperate 4 wheel drive and that took a bit to learn but I soon got used to it when I had to use it to drive it to work when it was snowing.
I don't know about the Pajero, some 4 wheel drives are constantly in 4 wheel drive.
I think there are quite a few people on here who drive 4 wheel drives so I am sure you will get plenty of advice.
Have fun with it, relax and enjoy.

Yep we currently have a Frontera and have also had a couple in the past.
Never really have the need to put it into 4wd mode on the road unless its winter with snow but really has saved us when needed and you'll find you soon have lots of friends who suddenly need to pop to the shops for essentials.
We do however do a lot of off roading with it due to where we live and you'll be amazed at some of the manoeuvres you can make without tipping it end over end or on its side

When We first had it and we knew snow was coming I took it to the car park down the road and practiced putting it into 4 wheel drive and driving it, they are much like any other car in normal drive, but I found it so handy when we had the snow. Obviously it depends how much snow there is. Even 4 wheel drives can't get through huge amounts of snow.
Stan is right you will be suprised how many new friends you make, who need to go to the doctors or who need milk and bread, but it's all good fun.
The year before last we even went to get salt to help clear the pavements for the oldies who lived down the road.

Know that feeling, we are downhill to work or anywhere for that matter and uphill coming home so in my little car it's a no go, but in the truck it's ideal. Because my OH works from home and has a wroks van he doesn't tend to use it much unless he is ferrying the oldies around, I use it quite often, sadly the last time we had heavy snow I couldn't use it because I was on holiday.

If you have horses the bonus is they are perfect size for hay bales in the back and large water drums

Where I live, I would never see another human being without my 4x4
In winter, we have snow the height of our house - but we can dig the cars out ( we know roughly where they are ) & my Toyota will do it's stuff!
I live 1000ft above sea level, so winter for us is usually October- April...
although we were once on skis only, for 4 months, as the snow was the height of the telegraph poles for months.
Enjoy your new car
