Are People Becoming too Dependant on Computers?

Go to any organisation such as bank, doctor, dentist etc. only to be told

"Sorry, can`t help you, the computers are down"

How did these places manage before computers.

Surely they should have a back up system to cover such an eventuality.

Computers are just machines, but it seems that they are becoming our masters instead of our slaves.

I wouldn't agree, I have been to the doctor, gone from there to the hospital for an xray, one hour later back to the doctor who can study the xray on her computor.

My ex used to go online, look at all available appointment times with her doctor for the next couple of weeks and book the most convenient one.

I do all my banking transactions online.

Re: Are People Becoming too Dependant on Computers?

I agree that computers are a good thing and a great help, when they work.

My gripe is that when the computers go down, everything seems to grind to a halt.

A friend of mine went to a dentist to make an appointment, but was told he couldn`t because their computers were down.

Why cant these places have a back up old fashioned paper diary

Another friend is an entertainer, he has his diary on computer, but also keeps a paper diary as well

Incidentally, I do all my banking online as well.

Re: Are People Becoming too Dependant on Computers?

One of my neighbours went to her GP to make an appointment a couple of weeks ago.  She was told that the computers were down and told her to go home and ring for an appointment only to be asked to go back to see the doctor ten minutes later.  Odd or what?

Computers are fine when they work but when they go down, they can cause mayhem.

Mustard, yes I do believe people are becoming too dependant on computers.

Even go into a shop these days and say your bill is £4.32 and you hand over £5.32 they look at you as if to say  "what are you doing" ?. If it were not for the till telling them you had £1 in change due to you they would be lost.

Whatever happened to mental arithmetic being taught in schools ?

Re: Are People Becoming too Dependant on Computers?

DC, I agree wholeheartedly about mental arithmetic being a no no these days.  There's a girl who works in the cafe at the members lounge of the health club I go to and if the bill comes to, say £2.30 and you hand over £5.30, she always asks why have you handed payment over that way.
