Good evening fellow FHG ladies (and gentlemen). Bit of advice needed.
After being towed home by the AA today because the clutch has gone in the car, she is now undriveable. The MOT is due in three weeks and the tax is due end of August so I have decided to SORN her for the time being as I cant afford all the bills.
My question is...if I SORN the car is it easy to get her re-taxed as she wont have MOT on her? Also because she wont be used can I cancel insurance on her as from 1 September?
Total novice at this and any input is appreciated

We had this recently. You will have to get the MOT done before you can tax her again but its perfectly legal to drive her to and from the MOT place untaxed in order to get it done.
We didn't bother messing with insurance as ours was only off the road for 2 months, but I believe you can do it.

Hi
Yes you can cancel the insurance. But this may make the cost of it a bit expensive, as they will calculate the premium from the start of the policy until you cancel it. Short term insurance is more expensive.
If you think you will have this car or another on the road before the end of your current policy, it maybe better to just suspend the insurance. Talk to your insurers and ask what they advise.
When taking a SORN vehicle for an MOT it's best to make an appointment with the garage, then if you happen to be seen you will be able to prove your journey was legitamate, as *elphaba* said it is legal to drive to and from an MOT test centre.
Sorry you've lost your car and hope you will be back on the road sooner than you expect

kaeptm is correct i think you'll need to speak to your insurer , it may be cheaper to keep it on than to cancel
what sort of car is it?
maybe you can find a cheap mechanic to fix it
in my experience its the labour cost that is most of the price of the bill, closely followed by VAT, the part may be under 40£

If you are going to sorn/ uninsure the car, you will need to be able to park it off road.. same for tax i think.

Yes off the road, also watch it with the insurance if you are going to cancel they will probably charge a cancellation fee, charged me £50, Some insurers will suspend the insurance but it depends who you are with.

hi very easy if you pay the tax the sorn automatically gets cancelled if the car is on private land a sorn covers having no inns.

Thanks for all your replies - very much appreciated.
Will SORN her at the end of the month. As I had tax and MOT due within two weeks I have no money anyway. She is on the drive at the moment until such time as she can be repaired. The Insurance is due for renewal in about 5 weeks so perhaps best to keep it going until then and then cancel...that way I get to keep another year's no claims on my policy.
Not too bothered as I tend to cycle or walk anyway but just used the car once a week for the big shopping and for taking my son to his dad's 20 miles away. Thankfully his dad is understanding and will do all the running about now. I do have a friend whose car I can use in the case of emergencies anyway....but it is just the thought of not being able to get in the car that feels really strange LOL.

Dont forget if you cancel insurance and the car gets stolen etc it wont be covered.
