It's definitely the same canal. No I've only seen it in pictures or in videos, I hadn't realised I was so close to that site, now I have somewhere else to go in a couple of weeks!

One thing to be aware of - you can't actually see the cascade very well from the visitor centre itself although there is a very good view of it from the westbound trains just before entering the tunnel.

I can also take a peek inside from the Diggle end, it's only got a metal fence in front of it and from what I can see, there's a gap I can exploit 😉

Re: ALL NEW Competition Thread...Last Post WINS ;-)

I'd advise against entering any part of any of the Standedge tunnels, particularly the unused bore, because there's a lot of hidden deep shafts inside it.

Goes without saying, though I can easily see through the fencing and with my new torch, I can illuminate a lot of the inside as well! I'm told by someone who has also been inside the Ryefield tunnel, that the end is blocked up... I'd best bring my spade ey? laughing

Well, if you're only having a look through a fence from publicly accessible land, there's no problem. slight_smile

Yes, it can definitely be accessed no_mouth

Also some good news on the Hyde Road front, yesterday was a rip roaring success, I managed to drag out a lot of the debris from inside, some heavy blighters there was too, I might be able to crawl inside soon and assess the insides properly!

Re: ALL NEW Competition Thread...Last Post WINS ;-)

That sounds very promising; is this the most you have managed so far on any excavation?

Re: ALL NEW Competition Thread...Last Post WINS ;-)

Indeed it is! My earlier excavation at the site further up into the station area, I manage to find a lot, but this has brought me a lot of good stuff! Though I do doubt that I will find too much inside as things stand at present, I would need to excavate much more of the surrounding embankment, which I think would take me beyond my means and what I could get away with doing!

Yes, it's probably wise not to start digging away at the embankment itself...

Re: ALL NEW Competition Thread...Last Post WINS ;-)

It would ease the weight above me a little, plus I do need to tidy up the place now, I have made... a bit of a mess, so it would be only right for me to do so! I'm also going to give a bit of a tidy to the rest of the place, seeing as I have been going about the place of my own accord, I should do something to offset all the stuff I've done.

Lastly, if the weather is good, back to Diggle this Saturday, and Standedge Tunnel, I hope to put up some good pics and vid afterwards!

Re: ALL NEW Competition Thread...Last Post WINS ;-)

Yes, of course tidying up is completely the correct thing to do.

I'll watch out for those videos.  Standedge is a particularly interesting tunnel complex.

Re: ALL NEW Competition Thread...Last Post WINS ;-)

I'll also do some rudimentary tidying of the surrounding area too, but I'll need to focus on all the bricks I've dug out from the ground first! Plus it'll make it easier to stand up in the place!

But first, I need to get ready for my expedition into Ryefield tunnel, cameras, torches and everything charged, boots waxed and all else I'll need!

I've just had a look at some pictures of it online; it does seem to still be in good condition.

Re: ALL NEW Competition Thread...Last Post WINS ;-)

You probably saw some of my pics too!

Well, the day mostly went well, the tunnel was great, dark as heck, but very interesting inside. Ufortunately I didn't manage to gain access to Diggle Station itself, from the bridge the gap under the fence looked big enough, but it was just an optical illusion, I was just too fat to get under 😞 Though there is a gap, big enough for someone with a slender build little problem, sadly, I was not!

Stil, I did also manage to get a much closer look at the other side of the disused tunnel by Standage!

Is any renewed non-essential travel message going to cause you a problem or would this count as excercise, doi you think...?

Re: ALL NEW Competition Thread...Last Post WINS ;-)

Possibly.... and I think travelling 25 miles to go walk a disused railway station and line would be classed as taking the mick laughing

I'm sure I'll be able to work around such things, plus there's a few places close by I can redo even if I can't, two I only spent a few minutes on, as I couldn't gain access... again!

Are you inside the zone where residents are restricted on non-essential travel?

Re: ALL NEW Competition Thread...Last Post WINS ;-)

I have absolutely no idea, I don't have a TV and I haven't exactly bothered to look up if I am or not, though as said, there are some places nearby that I can go to, Glazebury Railway Station for instance. The path up to one of the platforms is still there and I think some of the platforms are there too, but things didn't go as well as I hoped the first time I went, so I think it's high time for a second look!

Unless the remains were removed during the recent electrification work?  I can't see any sign of them on the satellite view?
