2015 Gardening Thread

Just thought that I'd start a gardening thread.  What's everyone growing this year?

You're right ed.  Muscari do spread like wildfire.  I pulled the majority of ours up when they'd finished last year and we've still got a few coming up.  I've no doubt we'll have more next year.  Our hyacinths are brilliant as well and they were from one of the pound shops.

Just been out and planted my peas, onions and some spinach, radish and swiss chard seed. Also planted up the horseradish roots in a container. While out there planting, little Madam was digging up and eating my asparagus plants!!!! Weird dog!

That must be annoying Pat - the dog spoiling your hard work.  It's not been fit to do any gardening either yesterday or today.  Hopefully, it will start picking up now so I can get some gardening done.

Chris, hopefully I caught her before she did too much damage. She gets such a kick out of being norty and has a little grin on her face when she does it. LOL

She's got expensive tastes if she likes asparagus 😄  The weather here has been vile for a few days, and though my landlord kindly replaced the corrugated plastic over my back three feet (it's not big enough to be a yard) the wind and rain has split it all, meaning I have been too wussy to even venture out there to inhale the hyacinths...

I love the springtime: the bulbs always cheer me up, and I even noticed a celandine on the way to work.  I'm going to my folks for the weekend - the churchyard there is full of celandines, violets, primroses and cowslips, so it will be interesting to see what they have out.  Probably just celandines so far, because it's been so bloomin' cold!

I envy those of you with veg gardens, though - I know they are huge amounts of work, but you can't beat the taste of something that's just been picked: and cucumbers that taste like cucumbers - mmmmm

I think I've got celendine, are the flowers yellow? it's such a lovely plant. We are on an old river bed and we still get the flowers that like the river, we've got that Jack in the Pulpit all over the borders, I've given up trying to get it all out. If it gets on my nerves I just pull up the leaves.

moving the rhubarb didn't bother it, it's growing away like mad! the peony has taken, that's coming up, I'm not sure wether to take it out of the big tub where I dumped it when we dug it out of a friends garden last year. They don't like being moved do they, so I may give it another year to get over it!

oooooh I wish it would warm up so I could get out there properly!

I always say that you can tell the difference with home grown produce tomatoes especially.  They have a taste of their own. A few of our tulips are in flower but there are a lot of them in bud.  I can't wait for them to flower because the garden will be a riot of colour.

You are so right about the tomatoes Chris. Carrots too taste so much nicer home grown.

I forgot to mention that on Gardener's World last week, Monty said that you could go on to the Gardener's World website, you could order some tomato seeds that are resistent to blight.  I ordered some after the show finished and they came on Monday with quite a large brochure from the suppliers of the seeds.  Can't complain about the service.  I'll let you know how we go on with them.

Yes, she is a strange dog. LOL

I replanted my tomato seeds again!!! This is the third time. The first lot got to leggy, the second lot got aphids on them and didn't do right. So sat yesterday and replanted the whole lot!! Luckily the seed packets send you so many seeds. I have about 12 different varieties here I am going to try this year. I also grow them for my friend's allotment. They give me veggies all the time so this way I feel I am giving something back to them. 🙂   Also my peppers were restarted too. I stuck them in propagators this time round so that hopefully will keep all bugs off them. And they will have a chance to get stronger.  I think it was the geraniums that I overwintered that had the aphids on them. 😞 They must have been hiding on the plants. They were moved back out to the garden yesterday.

I got most of my seeds from Joe Swift's site. He is one of the BBC gardeners.  He had alot on a really good discount last autumn and I bought them then. He has good prices on his stuff. 🙂

My mum's planted some of the tomato seeds that we got from Gardener's World so we shall have to see how they go on.  The weather's been awful here today as it hasn't stopped raining all day so no gardening has been done.

I managed to get some tidying up done this afternoon in both the front and back gardens.  How i wish flowers and plants would grow as well as weeds.

Lovely day here so we have been in the garden. We have cut back our hedge and removed a lot of brambles and ivy. We have bought 5 beech and 5 Hawthorn to plant tomorrow. To fill in the gaps. 3 trips to the tip probably another 2 tomorrow. Hard work but worth it.

If the weather is fine again tomorrow, I will get the electric lawn rake out and I will mow the lawn.  I always think that it's hard work gardening but it's well worth the effort.

The rose bushes I planted in the front garden a few weeks ago have taken which I am pleased about.

My little seedlings have sprouted. Fingers crossed this lot make it or I will be out buying plants. 😞 Going to do some flower seeds today if I get a chance. Would like some nice sized Marigolds to put out in the garden if I can keep the slugs off them.

I think what you need ed is one of Pat's hoggies.  They love slugs.

We tend to put slug pellets down but we don't have any pets.  However, if we had a hoggie, we wouldn't need to put slug pellets down would we?
