The Linux Distro Thread (maybe)

Thought I'd start this one off, rather than continue on another thread.

As a quick catch up for others:

Have a look at Unetbootin, as a means to try out different versions of Linux, without producing numerous coasters (unwanted CDs).
I haven't tried the method of installing to hard drive, only the USB flash drive method (so far).

Re: The Linux Distro Thread (maybe)

So far, Mint 13 looks really rather nice (I've installed the Cinnamon desktop environment.)

Really fiddly trying to set up the date and time as I want it - it takes you to an instruction-free website to change, for instance, May 18 (charmingly Victorian but my brain just finds it jarring) to 18 May. No options for 18th May, alas.

The website allows you to set up what you want, but forgets to mention that you then need to copy and paste that into the window opened to allow changes to clock etc. Hopefully this'll be streamlined as time goes by.

I still haven't revived my weather widget (how the heck do I know what the weather's like outside? Eh - what was that about looking out of the window???)

It's definitely slower to boot than W8 (which I now suspect of cheating gently *ahem*), and still has an irritating black screen while things are loading - could trap the unwary.

Additionally, I thought I'd installed the MATE desktop via Synaptic, but get no option to use this on start. Always possible I've installed something quite different, of course.

But, yes. All nice and quick - very like Mint 12 as far as I can see so far - and light on resources. Plenty of bundled software, and despite my previous complaints of Mint becoming too bloated for comfort on my netbooks, it takes up much less space than W8. If I can unkill the laptop with the two of them on it for long enough, I might be able to use GParted or something to come up with the actual numbers.

A nice distro, and I think it will be supported until 2017. Looking forward to the final release!

:^O Excellent OE.

You left out EJ Linux.

Optimised for web development. All help links have been removed because you shouldn't have installed it if you didn't know how to work it. Minimal desktop consisting mainly of a large command line terminal. Runs well, but error messages are quite insulting and always blame the user.

Then there's NBT Linux.

Also specialising in web development and programming. Very flexible and with an intuitive IA system - if you try to do something it is not capable of it will automatically generate an app or tweak which allows you to do it. System messages can be a little codescending.

Re: The Linux Distro Thread (maybe)

Looks as if Mint is experimenting with the hardware business:

http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2055

The short story, for those who hate links, is that they've teamed up with an Israeli company, CompuLab, to produce a silent and very compact desktop computer. There are two versions; both look about the same size as an ordinary router.

Being fanless, they should be extremely quiet. One could always fit an SSD in place of the provided conventional 250GB drive to really shut it up, I suppose.

The base model has a 1.0 GHZ dual core CPU and 4GB of RAM; the upmarket one has a 1.6 GHZ dual core CPU and 8 GB of RAM (plus a ribbed case to dissipate the extra heat resulting from the more powerful CPU.)

They come with Linux Mint 13, but anything can be installed.

Eight USB ports include two USB 3 ports. It's designed for instant and easy wireless connectivity, and looks pretty capable on the graphics side.

An interesting move. I'll be surprised if they get anywhere with it for three reasons:

1) A choice of 1 or 1.6GB CPUs is pretty underwhelming these days;

2) It's not cheap ($476 for the basic version; $549 for the more upmarket one - according to el Reg) for what it does;

3) The Windownistas will take one look and wail, "But it's not Windows." (Nothing to stop you installing it, apart from the price.)

Still, there's been some excitement shown, with people suggesting it would be a great media centre perched atop a telly and so forth.

It would also be great for house-proud folk who just want something to use on the net and to do dull business stuff with no MS etc proprietary software required. It could be hidden away pretty much anywhere, although it will need rather a lot of cables for all those USB ports, and the usual peripherals will dwarf the computer itself. (Bad enough losing floppy drives on modern computers; this one doesn't even have an optical drive - at least a few ports will presumably be permanently occupied by expensive add-ons.)

Still - good for them, and I hope they're much more successful than I expect them to be.

Re: The Linux Distro Thread (maybe)

I'm trying Mint 13 (Cinnamon desktop) on a beat-up old Toshiba laptop. It might not have a working touchpad, but at least it has a dual core CPU (1.73GB; the most powerful I own), and the graphics support 3D acceleration blah blah that Cinnamon needs.

And to my consternation, I'm finding Mint 13 downright trying.

It's quick, it's light on resources, it's pretty. Not greatly different from old faithful Mint 9, in other words.

But I'm someone who came to Linux after it became easier to use. I liken then power and flexibility of the command line, but have resigned myself to lacking any aptitude for it. Thank goodness for forums/copy and paste.

And I get the impression that, to make Mint 13 feel as mature, useful and under your control as 9 (the last LTS), you need to be comfortable with the command line, and to own developer skills and aptitude.

These are the things bugging me at the moment.

I can find no way of getting rid of the loud and irritating startup tone - that racket a bit like the PA system at the old Luxembourg airport clearing its throat.

During installation, I opted for "require a password to log in" or whatever it is. Meh. They've made it harder work. With Mint9, the log-in screen opens with your main user account offered by default. Click on and enter your password. (If you want to use another user account, then sure, another step is involved.)

No longer. Now you have to enter your full user name manually. Every time. And thanks to the wonders of muscle memory, I keep launching into the password, blowing the authentication and having to start again.

Minor, but irritating. And I can't find any way to change it. Or even to set the darned thing to start without a password. There used to be a start-up manager that enabled these changes to be made. Blowed if I can find anything.

To change the date/time layout used to be simple. You clicked on the clock, and worked through the preferences offered.

Not any more. Oh, no. Now you're taken to a site which offers the code needed to change these settings. You're not told how to actually use the site, as that would spoil the fun. Thickos like me eventually work out that you put together/copy what you want, then leave the browser, return to the settings window and paste your new code over the existing version.

Talk about fix it until it's broken.

Which leads me to my next whinge. What happened to the little weather widget? The sadly missed clock settings app also allowed you to enter your physical location, and even the units you preferred your wind and temperature in. No searching, no copy and paste - just simple and effective dialogue.

It's gone. If I had any idea what the app used to be called, I suppose I could search for it. But it was part of clock settings. And those how have a completely different method. And so on.

I hate the black screen during start up. I found a command to replace the old Mint logo with the little dots - but this only happens after the initial black screen.

I just keep getting the feeling that it's not quite finished. That, yes, we changed some things, but haven't quite got round to making them as user-friendly as they were back in Mint 9.

And to top it all, I fired up these forums and was presented with that repellent we-keep-you-safe skinny bag in the pink shirt who makes me so happy I never married. Must get off my rear end and figure out how to import a Firefox profile from another machine to avoid having to bock these annoyances from scratch each time.

I'm determined to learn to like it - because apart from these quite extraordinarily irritating little niggles, I think it's going to be a pretty impressive piece of work. Cinnamon seems to involve less clicking than Unity, and I find the whole presentation somehow less claustrophobic.

The MATE version seems fine on my old Dell - which has been running Mint 9 very happily for yonks, and which lacks 3D acceleration.

So for goodness sakes don't take my whining too seriously.

And if anyone's found the answers to  the little bothers mentioned above, do tell. I know my stupidity and incapacity lies at the root of it. But would sure appreciate a hand.

(At least Element Hiding Helper saw off Miss Pink Acid Drop. Thank goodness for some simple solutions in life.)

Re: The Linux Distro Thread (maybe)

Well, you prompted me to dig out my 'powerful' backup/travel laptop (a Via C7-M HP 2133) - maginificent resolution for a small screen!

Mint 13 (Cinnamon) installed no problem, apart from the obligatory connect via ethernet until BCM43xx wireless driver was downloaded.

I've hated the blank boot screen since it was introduced a few releases back and it resists all my footering to get a textual boot up. 😞 Even tried installing Plymouth themes, for a graphical boot, to no avail - yet.

Yes, you now have to manually install Startup Manager, which blissfully ignores requests to use text/splash.

Strangely, I don't get the old startup sound (which I actually quite liked) but normally have the volume turned down to minimum, so no great loss.

Took me a while to realise that Alt-Right Click on the bottom task/status bar is the new way to add in applets and move them around. So, I've now got the usual desktop switcher, application killer, notification icon and so on - including the weather one 😉

Also discovered a better weather applet in Synaptic, that has a nearest weather station that is not 30 miles away 😉

Perfect - don't know how I missed that.

A bonus - the "Accessibility" tab (in Login Window) > Sounds allowed the offending sounds to be killed. Might also be possible to enable them from there, unless something more complicated is going on.

Re: The Linux Distro Thread (maybe)

Yep, I seem to spend an awfully long time downloading each .iso.

Be interesting to hear how you get on, oxie.

I've yet to try VB in Windows - not sure my ancient XP equipment could handle the excitement, to be honest.

What's nice about Mint is that if your virtual machine's not up to Cinnamon, it simply resorts to the Gnome 2-like "fallback."

I have great difficulty with VB now, as a result of my very poor graphics capability.

And W8 simply won't install in VB unless the host computer's CPU is capable of virtualisation. Which none of mine seems to be.

The MATE version is nice on older machines, and I think is what I will have to replace - 9 with on this old warhorse if it's still running next year. It simply can't handle Cinnamon.

Posting earlier than usual, as I see we're to blessed with changes later on. (I assume "going live"means "becoming effective." Wish I could overcome my aversion to jargonistic managment duck-speak. "Roll out"? You roll a new aeroplane out of the hangar. You roll out the barrel. You introduce everything else. 24/7 appears to mean "full time." "Input" as a verb might be technically correct for the entry of data into a computer, but applied to entering passwords and such is pushing it. Although I realise there is now no noun that can't be verbed. And so on...)

Let's hope for real improvements. There's been a lot of fiddling going on over the last couple of weeks, and it would be great if it all culminated in a pleasanter and more usable site. (And if pages would actually finish loading on my blessed computers.)

Back on-topic - let us know how you get on, Oxie. I have -13/Maya on a laptop, and generally really like what I see. Impressively low resource use, at least as quick as -9 and although mine is slow to boot, it shuts down in no time.
