Yes, even over 300 years ago there were people making specialist parts or doing a specific job. It's not generally realised that those with their name on things didn't make the whole thing.
It's thought that even the famous clockmakers bought in partly finished movements and over in France they had it down to a fine art by the 19th century. They called some of their "rough" movements a Blanc Roulant.
