Keycode before purchase - is this a scam?

A buyer is requesting the Keycode of a game before he purchases to ensure the game will work if he does buy. This feels like a scam - its a £3 game and he is most insistent he needs it. I'm assuming that this goes against the Ebay guidelines on what you should and shouldn't ask for / share?

By key code do you mean like a digital version of the game?

if so then if they have the key code, well, they have the game and then wouldn’t need to buy it surely?

No it’s an older game that had a key code with the disc. He says he wants
to check that it’s not assigned elsewhere before he buys it. Doesn’t sound
right to me

if he bought it and found it was then he could just open an item not as described return request anyway.
