Community Ranking system

Community Ranking system

Mentors, Champion , Guide, Engager, Conversationalist, Contributor, Member, Helper , Advisor, etc - 

I must assume the title must reflect some form of experience or knowledge, or access to higher authorities.

 

where can i see what the various title ranks members are allocated as it appears to have changed since the concept of 'Mentors'

and are they all unpaid as was originally stated?

Ok i just have the one mitten on.

 

I stepped down as a Mentor partly to prove my point that i genuinely am not bothered by silly titles.  There were of course other reasons too.

 

Not sure if i like being Champion the Wonder Horse now 🙂

What i am wondering is.....

 

A....Are these silly titles automatically upgraded depending on how much a member abuses the system

 

or B.....are they reviewed say....every 3 months or so?

 

I have a problem if i am upgraded to Guru and defo do NOT wish to be upgraded to Mentor again.

When they were brought in there was some talk about how they were awarded for quantity, rather than quality.  So perhaps they're awarded simply going on the number of posts?

 

It seemed, to begin with anyway, that every time I was given another badge, that I was "ranked up" and had three different ranks in almost as many days.  I forget my first title, but was quite happy to get the promotion to "Conversationalist".   But not so happy about being raised to a "Specialist" as I have no idea what I'm supposed to specialise in. 

 

I occasionally wonder what my next promotion might be as I seemed to miss out several ranks between Conversationalist and Specialist, but I'm sure I'll be thrilled whatever it is and whenever I'm honoured with it.

My flute teacher (40 years ago) declared that "Every child can play a musical instrument. It's just finding the right one for each child" and then suggested to my mother that a violin would be far more pertinent to me  !  So using that theory it must be a case of finding out what you specialise in. You seem very knowledgable in glass and ornamental antiques so perhaps that is where your specialist status lies ? 

On the subject of badges, I think it would be a great idea to have an online "sticker book" where we can stick our badges and proudly display them.

You might well be right about that, I hadn't thought about it from the point of view of what a poster sells.  I have noticed that another poster who often has interesting things to say, regularly refers to her experiences selling vintage / collectable fragrances.

 

On badges, I think that the way ebay just lines them up in rows (the last time I looked) isn't very imaginative and your sticker book idea would give us the chance to personalise them in some way.

I did vaguely think about suggesting, as they're displayed on our profiles, that perhaps they might look better if shown as if they were medals pinned to a silhouette of a tunic of some sort??

... or better still, get rid of badges, silly labels and kudos. 

 

All of them cause so much bother on here - a simple thumbs up/down is all that is needed, without the 'league tables', which lead to complaints about posters trying to climb the leaderboard or leaving kudos for their mates.

So far as kudos is concerned my view is that only the opening poster should have that option.

 

Having a thumbs down may only add to  abuse of the system.

Well, well, I've learned something today. Thanks for that link @pixiesen2020 

I saw I'd been tagged as a Helper but had no idea that such a thing as Community Ranks existed. 

I find it all rather quaint - but if my posts are useful to anyone, then I'm happy to keep helping 🙂

Our local paper has the thumbs up/down options on comments and it seems to work quite well. It gives a good guide to public feeling on something.

 

I don't leave that may kudos (I don't think I do, anyway!), and often I leave them for something that makes me laugh, rather than something I agree with. However, over the last few days in particular, I have seen a few posts that I would really like to have left a thumbs down for.

Many threads are started by people who have no interest in reading or listening to anything that doesn't suit their own view or agenda; including when a subsequent poster (politely) tries to actually help them. I think if only the opening poster was able to leave kudos it would result in a far more skewed ranking system than what exists now.

 

In my unofficial, unpaid and undeserved role as an "advisor" I advise everyone to ignore the silly ranking system.   

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

I'd forgotten about that leaderboard. Don't think I even know where it is. I must go and find it to see how well I'm doing [tongue firmly in cheek].

On a similar point, but related, how would you feel if eBay restricted the variety and colour of fonts we can use when posting here.

 

There are two particular posters, one of whom posts in a very large font, and one who posts mainly in red. I feel that inexperienced users may inadvertantly assume that these posters had some sort of advanced knowledge, to be allowed to post in this way. As it happens both of these posters' knowledge is often rather outdated and irrelevant. I appreciate their attempts to help, but feel that their input is given more empasis than it deserves. (And before anyone points out that we could all do it, can you imagine the mess this place would be in, if we did?)

 

I just feel it would be better if all our posts followed a similar format, and the "look at me" brigade had to rely on the quality of their posts to build their reputations, rather than their gimmicky presentation.

I'm at that "need glases for close work" stage and I find the red font on white background terribly off-putting and difficult to read so I just skip past the posts that use it.

A long time ago I put to eBay that come titles are very misleading - for example "Specialist"  that implies that the member answering a question has deep knowledge on the subject.

 

I was ignored and if I keep on I think I will get a brand new title of [tor] mentor.

It is eBay silly classing of member on how much they input on the community platform. Some Advisor's / Expert on here have not got a clue and give poor advice. So don’t get hung of on the worthless title eBay have given. The title is pointless good advice can come from any member of eBay. The titles should be scraped.
