seller doesnt have item

I have had two seperate occassions where the seller advertises an item and you buy it. Then they contact you with a story about inventory errors mean that stock wont come in for a week or 2. What then happens is they ask you to wait, they also mark the item as dispacthed because if they dont they will get the sale cancelled by ebay. My belief is they then go out and buy the item and send it to you. SO what is happening is they advertise an item they dont have but the advert offers to send it within 2 days (how can they when they dont have the item). They hook the sale and then make you wait. If you wanted to wait you wouldnt have selected them based on 2 days delivey as you need it now, not in 2 weeks. The first time i had this happen i waited but the second time is fool me once fool you, fool me twice fool me and i am very angry. Ebay has no direct way of reporting this sharp practice.

As soon as eBay's estimated delivery date range has passed, you can open a case for item not received...

As well as an item not received case, if the item arrives after the estimated delivery date you can return ot at the seller's expense for a refund.  That hits them in the pocket.

Re: seller doesnt have item

They have refunded me when i went ballistic.

I think this circumvents all the ebay safeguards.

My point is that as more suppliers advertise things they dont have they tailor the auction to attract sales and then delay delivery. This reduces their need for inventory.

It doesn't circumvent the money back guarantee,  which is the primary safeguard for buyers.

Re: seller doesnt have item

What reason did they give for the cancellation / refund?

If they quoted ' out of stock' they gave themselves a damaging defect on their account.

You won't see this defect,  but it's there,  and if it's a action they take repeatedly quoting out of stock,  and the defects mount up so will selling sanctions even bans. eBay expect sellers to have the items they are selling for prompt dispatch,  they do not like disappointed buyers, who tend not to return ! 🙄

Re: seller doesnt have item

What they said was

Did i want to wait

or

did i want to cancel the order

I said cancel (because i needed the item quickly and was angry they were messing me about)

Which then makes it me who cancelled. (I am sure this how they contrived it.)

Re: seller doesnt have item

Aaah then that question changes matters,  if they then selected Buyer Requests to Cancel,  no defect for their account,  as they received your permission to cancel !

Re: seller doesnt have item

I gueessed they were up to something when they said we have marked as dispatched because we don't want ebay to cancel the order.

By this i mean i got an email saying item dispatched. Then 5 minutes later i got an email to say

"oops sorry inventory error can you wait for 2 weeks or do you want to cancel,  oh and by the way we marked as dispatched because we don't want ebay to cancel the order"

They knew what they doing and played the system

Re: seller doesnt have item

Yep, they knew what they were doing.  If you had answered yes I do want my item,  but delivered as shown on the original listing when I purchased and paid for the item.

There are only a few reasons for a seller to cancel,  then if they selected ' Buyer Requests to Cancel' ,  you could have contacted CS, explain you did not agree to the cancellation, eBay can see a disappointed buyer, and again a defect would make its way to the seller's account.

Re: seller doesnt have item

This is their message

"Good Afternoon,

Thank you for your purchase. Unfortunately, we are having some stock inventory issues where items are being put back in stock which we do not currently have so the item you have ordered is out of stock at the moment, apologies.

We do have stock on order and due from our suppliers on July 4th. Would you be happy to wait for this stock and we will dispatch promptly once we receive it? Or would you prefer I cancel and refund this order to you?

I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please note, I will be marking this order as dispatched temporarily just to avoid eBay cancelling your order whilst we wait for confirmation from you, so please ignore any notification you may receive.

Kind Regards,
Charlotte"

Very good english and very apologetic but

"items are being put back in stock which we do not currently have"

doesn't make much sense

Re: seller doesnt have item

They basically did not have the items in stock,  awaiting a new delivery, but the items were still listed for sale.

Not good selling,  not condoned by eBay, but seller knew citing ' out of stock' for cancelling , brings about that damaging defect,  so they asked your permission to cancel,  this as explained above,  brings no defect.

Re: seller doesnt have item

Unfortunately whenever ebay writes policies in good faith people will take advantage of the system  - in this common scenario sellers who use retail arbitrage often  list for example the complete parts list of a manufacturer whilst holding no stock or even an agreement to drop ship, then shop around to try and buy cheaper  and fulfill an order  often unsuccesfully in a reasonable timescale if at all.

They do not even know if the item is available and quite often invalidate any guarantee or warranty being an unauthorised reseller - these items are technically second hand in terms of selling in that the dealer sells to them then they sell it on without authority.

It is difficult to detect before purchasing but a seller with every conceivable part or item is a potential problem.

ebay are not the only online platform which attracts these practices - each platform deals with it in different degrees of sanction.

Do ebay turn a blind eye to this practice - possibly by putting the onus on the seller - a reluctance to lose revenue may play a part in the practice being against ebay policy but remaining without serious sanction.

Re: seller doesnt have item

If you wish to speak to an agent you need to call at 8 a.m. when the lines first open to 10p.m. on weekdays outside those hours,  CS is manned by auto assistance.

This is the easiest and quickest way to contact eBay Customer Services, for a Call Back option.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/eua?id=5275&mkevt=1&mkpid

Lines open 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. on weekdays

9 a.m. - 6 p.m. on weekends.

Automated agents will be available on chat outside of the above hours.

I do recommend contacting CS very first thing in the morning, when the lines first open, as there's more chance of Dublin answering.
